The structure and aromatic expression of a great Barolo wine
The property
Founded in the 19th century by the Falletti family, Marchesi di Barolo is a pillar of Piedmontese wine, creator of the famous Barolo. Located in the Langhe, a site classified by UNESCO, the house operates 120 hectares of vineyards on limestone-marl soils, ideal for nebbiolo. Since 1929, the Abbona family has perpetuated the tradition with ancestral methods while integrating measured innovations. Unique for its royal link and philanthropic commitment, it embodies the balance between tradition and modernity.
The vineyard
This Barolo Riserva 1965 comes exclusively from plots located in the municipality of Barolo. The terroir, characterized by soils rich in clay and limestone, locally called "White Lands", gives the wine a powerful structure and an abundance of tannins, guarantees of longevity. This unique geological combination contributes to the authentic expression of nebbiolo in this exceptional terroir.
The vintage
The year 1965 was marked by a cool and rainy spring, followed by a hot and sunny summer, then a mild and dry autumn. These contrasting climatic conditions allowed optimal maturation of the grapes, offering a perfect balance between concentration and freshness.
Vinification and aging
The grapes were hand-picked, destemmed, and gently pressed. Spontaneous fermentation took place with higher temperatures in the middle phase and lower towards the end. Post-fermentation maceration lasted for about two months, followed by spontaneous malolactic fermentation in the spring. Aging was carried out in large traditional barrels before bottling in 1972, with a cork replacement in 2004.
Blend
100% nebbiolo, an emblematic grape variety of Piedmont, recognized for its ability to produce exceptional aging wines, rich in tannins and complex aromas.
