An elegant and refined Nebbiolo d'Alba from Piedmont by Marchesi di Barolo

The estate

Marchesi di Barolo is a historic estate in Piedmont founded in 1929 by Pietro Abbona. Located in the village of Barolo, this prestigious House is now run by the sixth generation of the Abbona family, with Ernesto Abbona at the helm, alongside his children Valentina and Davide. The estate spans approximately 105 hectares of vineyards spread across several Piedmontese appellations. Marchesi di Barolo stands out for its commitment to sustainable viticulture, certified SQNPI since 2022, and for its historic cellars housing an exceptional collection of older vintages.

The vineyard

The Nebbiolo d'Alba Roccheri comes from the lieu-dit Roccheri located in La Morra. The vineyard sits on clay-limestone soils that give this Barolo wine its characteristic structure and elegance. The vines are trained using the Guyot system, a traditional method that allows optimal control of vigor and grape quality. The harvest is carried out by hand during the second ten days of October, an ideal period for achieving optimal phenolic ripeness of the Nebbiolo.

The vintage

The 2019 vintage in Piedmont is considered excellent. Despite variable weather conditions during the growing season, attentive winemakers were able to produce balanced wines combining richness and structure, ready to drink while retaining interesting aging potential.

Winemaking and aging

After a manual harvest, the grapes for the Nebbiolo d'Alba Roccheri 2019 are gently crushed and destemmed. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks with regular pumping over to allow a gentle and progressive extraction of tannins and aromas. After alcoholic fermentation, the wine is transferred to insulated cement tanks for malolactic fermentation at a controlled temperature. Aging continues in oak barrels, combining small barriques and larger vessels, to refine the wine's structure while preserving the fruity expression of the Nebbiolo.
