Description
A Beautifully Aged Historic Wine
Founded in the 1860s Vega Sicilia skyrocketed to fame with their top cuvee Unico that is still largely in demand to this day! Located in the Ribera del Duero, the original founder returned from France with cuttings of Bordeaux varieties that he planted alongside the indigenous variety known as “Tinto del Pais” or “Country Red.” Today we know this grape as the famous Tempranillo. In 1982, the Alvarez family purchased Vega Sicilia and continued the legacy of creating beautiful wines.
The 2006 vintage was released after the sale of the 2007 and 2008 because the winery thought it needed more time to age in the bottle. A blend of 94% Tempranillo and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon the wine has a beautiful bouquet with dark fruit and a balanced note of herbs. The wine ages for 10 years in both new and old barriques, creating a silky full bodied red. On the palate there is a balance of red fruit along with flavours of liquorice, tobacco and minerality. It has smooth and structured tannins with a fresh acidity kick to it.
