Portugal
The viticultural Portugal produces dry still wines (white and red). Yet, the country is mainly known for its Portos (fortified wines). The Douro Valley is one of the oldest viticultural regions in Europe. With 40 000 hectares of vineyard - which are divided between the banks of the Douro- this valley distinguishes itself by a landscape of splendid and uncommon schist terraces. The Porto Vintage is produced in this unique place and is considered being the most noble. Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca and Tinta Cão are the 5 major varietals used in the making of the famous Porto Vintage.

The 2003 Croft has a relatively exotic nose for this Port, with cherry liqueur, peat, licorice and melted dark chocolate on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent, ripe black fruit. It is plush and heady, the acidity lower than the 2007 or 2009, so that the finish is rounded, decadent and spicy, without the tension and class of other vintages. It is a hedonistic delight, but it would not be my choice of Croft at the moment. Tasted March 2013. Duriense - Port - Red - 20.5° - More Info- Parker : 90

The 2011 Quinta do Noval Nacional has an entrancing bouquet that unfolds with time. It is extraordinarily concentrated with black currant pastilles, baked earth, a touch of terracotta and bay leaf that gains more dimension with time. Yet there is undeniable purity and elegance here, a seductive chorus of aromas perfectly in tune. The palate has a wondrous symmetry and focus, perfect acidity and immense purity. Everything here is so precise and at the same time, unassuming, as if this Nacional is aware of its breeding without the impulse to brag about it. It has closed down just a little since last year, but I take this as a positive sign that this legendary Nacional will delight for decades rather than years. This is the kind of elixir that leaves you speechless - surely the finest Nacional since the ethereal 1963. Drink 2020-2060. Tasted January 2014. The 2013 Vintage Port is a blend of 20% Touriga Nacional; 10% Tinta Roriz and 70% old vines (of which Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz predominated, the winery noted), and it was aged for 18 months in wood. It comes in at 94 grams per liter of residual sugar. This 2013 completes Noval's unusual trilogy of declared Vintage Ports in 2011-2013. The quality justifies the declarations. Showing more concentration than the fresh 2012, also reviewed, this is pointed, powerful and intense, with serious grip on the finish. The initial impression of lushness fades quickly, because this is all about the power just now. You shouldn't even think of approaching it now. This will need a consumer with a cellar and some patience. That patience should be rewarded in time. All that said, by the end of the week, after some six days open, it actually started becoming more approachable. It wasn't quite as intense as the 2011 or as open as the 2012. Falling in the middle, it will certainly need time to come into full balance and become more expressive. It will reward your patience. Duriense - Port - Red - 19.5° - More Info- Parker : 95

The 2007 Fonseca is maturing nicely, with a perfumed, high toned, rich bouquet of macerated black cherries, blueberry, creme de cassis and vanilla. The palate is very harmonious with plush dark cherry fruit, fresh fig, salted licorice and a supple, rounded, spicy finish that delivers wonderful purity and length. This is a sexy Fonseca, perhaps more generous and alluring than the 2009 - a quintessential Fonseca that should peak in 15-20 years time. Duriense - Port - Red - 21° - More Info- Parker : 95

2011 Vintage Port
With two years maturation in oak barrels, Ramos Pinto's 2011 Vintage Port should keep for 50+ years. With a blood-red hue, this Porto is produced from the Ramos Pinto's best Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, and Tinta Barroca parcels. The nose exudes ripe fruits such as cherry, cassis, or even blackberry, as well as subtle hints of spices and wood. The palates still carries a strong built due to the wine's young age, along with lovely energy and a persistent finish.
Wine Advocate-Parker :
The 2011 Ramos Pinto has a lifted bouquet of black cherries, creme de cassis and licorice that is intense but does not quite have the delineation of some of its peers at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine line of acidity and perhaps more pedigree than the aromatics. There is splendid weight here and an engaging harmonious finish with a sprinkle of white pepper and a little clove. Affording several minutes with this sample, the nose gains clarity with aeration, so I might be inclined to give this decanting before pouring. Tasted May 2013. Quinta do Noval Vintage Port 2015: A powerful Port wine
Le Quinta do Noval Vintage Port 2015 is a wine produced in the Porto appellation. Quinta do Noval Vintage Port 2015 is a blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cao and Sousao. The wine is matured for 18 months, in barrels in Quinta's air-conditioned cellar.
2015 is characterised by a cold and dry winter, followed by a hot spring. Spring was a mixture of extremely high temperatures and heavy showers. The rain was ideal for the grapes' development. They reacted very well to the hot, dry summer. Harvest began on September 2nd, with 30% of the production being collected before the rain from September 13th-16th. Harvest resumed on September 24th with perfectly mature grapes.
Quinta do Noval Vintage Port 2015 has notes of wild black pepper. In the mouth, it is fresh and well-balanced. The tannic structure is outstanding. This vintage is powerful, with an incredibly long finish. Undoubtedly, a future legend for Quinta do Noval.
Wine Advocate-Parker :
The 2015 Vintage Port is a field blend aged for 18 months in old casks. It comes in at 94 grams per liter of residual sugar. This was a tank sample, out of barrel and the final blend, about two weeks away from bottling when tasted at Noval's lodge, but it was also retasted from bottle in the USA a short while later. Given the shipping not long after bottling, I'll still use a range, even if leaning to the higher part of it. It should be in the marketplace by the time this article appears. Lighter styled, this has an elegant mid-palate and subtle demeanorùbut Noval always seems to me to emphasize mid-palate finesse. Then, there are the gloriously fresh flavors of the vintage, a year that produced fine intensity of flavor. Strongly aromatic, it also has hints of eucalyptus on the nose and/or cistus. Tightening steadily as it aired out, it demonstrated that it has that serious backbone, the firmness, I've come to expect, too. It was much more interesting about three days after it was first opened, sunnier and more expressive. The finish is long and jam-packed with delicious fruit, while the purity of that fruit is remarkable. Between its backbone and the freshness of the year, it should age well. Few will refuse a second glass of this debonair Porto at the moment, but it has a significant upside in the cellar. The fashionable trend these days is to suggest drinking Vintage Port younger and younger, but many will be happier with this around 2030-2035 or so. Admittedly, it is wonderfully delicious now. Now with a couple years in bottle, I am erring to the Taylor's over the Fonseca (although these can always change!) The Taylor's show more delineation and refinement with pure black currant, cassis, pencil box, hints of marzipan and a hint of dark chocolate. The palate is full-bodied and sumptuous with super-fine tannins, very pure blackberry and boysenberry notes interlaced with cedar, dried fig and a touch of black pepper on the beautifully refined finish. Excellent. Duriense - Port - Red - 20.5° - More Info- Parker : 97

The 2007 Croft Vintage has a soft, fig and date-scented bouquet that opens up beautifully in the glass, warm and inviting. The palate is medium-bodied with soft, supple tannin, a fine line of acidity and a ripe finish with dark cherries, boysenberry jam and a citric edge lending poise and delineation. There is a nice hint of fieriness on the finish that gives it a little hubris and brio, though not excessively, since that would not be in keeping with Croft's style.
