Description
The intensity and aromatic richness of a Pommard Premier Cru red wine
The estate
Founded in 1731 in Beaune, Bouchard Père & Fils is one of the oldest wine houses in Burgundy. For nearly three centuries, 9 generations have taken over, one after the other, with the same ambition: to create an exceptional estate in Burgundy.
Gradually built up over the years, the vineyards of the Bouchard Père et Fils estate now cover 130 hectares of vines. Combining prestigious appellations with exceptional plots, the Bouchard Père & Fils vineyard constitutes a unique wine heritage in Burgundy.
The vineyard
This Pommard wine stems from a vineyard planted on reddish soils, because of its iron oxide content, resting on clay-limestone soils. This terroir provides characteristics praised by Victor Hugo, who described these Burgundy wines as having "breath, inspiration and sometimes genius."
Winemaking and ageing
After being harvested by hand, the grapes are carefully sorted and then destemmed (totally or partially depending on the vintage). Fermentation takes place in small containers and gentle pressing ensures optimal vinification. Depending on the profile of the vintage, vatting can last from 15 to 20 days. The wine is aged for 12 to 14 months in French oak barrels (with 30 to 40% new barrels) in the Bastions cellars of the old Château de Beaune.
