Description
All of the complexity and freshness of a great wine from Spain
The estate
A family bodega created in 1932, Muga is, today, one of the most iconic wine producers in the La Rioja wine region, located in the north of Spain. With a respect for traditions, the working methods of yesteryear, clarifying the crus using fresh egg whites, the use of noble materials…since its inception, Bodega Muga has paid careful attention to producing great wines which reflect all of the typicality and authenticity of their terroir.
The vineyard
Prado Enea Gran Reserva 2014 is produced from very beautiful terroirs in La Rioja Alta, a region located in the north of Spain. Not far from Haro, the Muga family’s various vineyards are rooted upon exceptional soils thanks to the combination of Mediterranean and continental climates. The Atlantic influence subjects the areas to significant temperature variations between day and night, fostering phenolic concentration and acidity in the berries. The vines from which this Rioja wine is issued blossom at 550 metres above sea level, upon a soil rich with the influence of clay, limestone and alluvium. These vines are located on the high-quality terroir of Villalba de Rioja, on a south-facing slope on the Obarenes Mountains.
Winemaking and ageing
Like for the Torre Muga cuvée, the harvests for the Prado Enea Gran Reserva cru are the most late-ripening of the estate. The grapes ferment in wooden barrels with the use of native yeasts and without temperature control. Maceration lasts for 16 days. The wine then ages for a minimum of 36 months in French oak barrels. After this ageing phase, the wine is lightly fined using fresh egg whites before being bottled and kept to age in the cellar for another 36 months.
Blend
Tempranillo, Grenache, Mazuelo and Graciano.
Tasting
Colour
Prado Enea Gran Reserva 2014 presents a deep and seductive intense cherry colour.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet expresses a wonderful harmony and complexity, but also greatly subtle delicacy and elegance. Creamy notes of oak mix with a large range of red berries and black forest fruits, as well toasted and liquorice notes.
Palate
The Prado Enea Gran Reserva 2014 gently opens in the palate, then reveals a rather full-bodied character with a silky and round texture, balanced out by a very pleasant freshness. With its ripe tannins and beautiful acidity, this vintage is already a true delight on the palate and will remain so for many years to come.
Food and wine pairings
Prado Enea Gran Reserva 2014 is the perfect companion to meat, fish and cheese. It can also be very much appreciated as an aperitif.
