Description
An expressive and refined Second Vin from Tuscany
The estate
In the early 1980s, the first vines were planted on the Masseto hill in soils poised on a Pliocene blue clay vein, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, near the famous small village of Bolgheri, in Tuscany. In this harsh environment, the Merlot varietal has found a way to flourish in a land considered more suitable to the cultivation of Cabernet Sauvignon. For almost 40 years now, Masseto’s wines have become true legends of Tuscan viticulture and a reference among fine Italian wines throughout the world.
The vineyard
The Masseto vineyard is located in Tuscany, in Bolgheri. This wine-growing area enjoys a Mediterranean climate that is strongly influenced by the presence of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
The wine
Produced since 2017 with the same rigour as its elder, Massetino is the "Second Vin" of Masseto. Massetino 2020 from the Masseto estate is a fine Tuscan wine that boasts a bold personality along with an opulent and elegant expression.
The vintage
A mild, wet winter, punctuated in March by an episode of frost that had no impact on the vineyard, gave way to a warm spring. The significant rainfall recorded in mid-June preceded a scorching summer. The rainy spells at the end of August and the ideal temperature variations between day and night helped to refine the ripening process. The harvest was early and rapid in order to preserve the freshness of the grapes.
Vinification and ageing
The hand-picked grapes are destemmed and then gently pressed before being vatted by gravity flow. Vinification by plot. Spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, along with two to three pump-overs per day. Maceration for 21 to 25 days. Malolactic fermentation in barrels (50% new oak). Following 12 months of ageing, blending and an additional 3-month ageing period are carried out before bottling along with a rest period until the release of this fine wine.
The blend
Merlot (97%)
Cabernet Franc (3%).
