An aromatic and expressive Tuscan red wine

The estate

Human endeavour and the man are central to this estate. Eugenio was the founder of this wine venture. It is thanks to the determination of his commitment and passion that Le Macchiole was born. His untimely death did not put an end to his dream : his wife, Cinzia, with the help of oenologist Luca D'Attoma, are continuing his venture. After years of work and achievement, the wines are now unanimously acclaimed by the critics. The work of this estate is essentially in the vineyard. The philosophy here is to respect the natural cycles of life. This respect is also reflected in the vinification of these great Italian wines.

The vineyard

Messario 2017 is a Tuscan wine that stems from vineyards named Vignone 1999 and Puntone 1994.

The wine

First produced in 1994, this IGT Toscana wine embodies a personal challenge with one of the most planted varieties in Bolgheri, on the Tuscan coast, and in the world: Merlot. From the start, the idea was to turn the best grapes into a punchy wine with lots of personality, moving as far away as possible from the softer, more predictable style that is often associated with this variety.

The name "messorio" refers to the wheat harvest, one of the most fundamental parts of the agricultural cycle.

Winemaking and ageing

After the harvests done by hand, which took place during the last week of August and the first week of September, the grapes were sent to the cellar to be vinified with great precision. Fermentation and maceration were carried out in steel and concrete vats for a period of 25 days. Then the wine was aged for 18 months in new oak barrels.

Messorio 2017 from Le Macchiole is 100% Merlot.
