An exceptional Italian Red wine combining elegance and power
The estate
Created in 1993 by Ferruccio Ferragamo, Il Borro covers 1100 organic hectares in the heart of Valdarno Di Sopra in Toscana. This historic estate, whose origins date back to the 12th century, has been cultivating merlot, cabernet sauvignon, syrah, petit verdot, sangiovese and chardonnay according to organic principles since 2015. The estate produces 12 cuvées, 10 of which are organic, combining millennial heritage and modern viticulture excellence within a restored medieval village that is a member of Relais & Châteaux.
The vineyard
Located in the IGT Toscana region, the vineyard benefits from an exceptional terroir where each grape variety has been planted in the soils best suited to express its full potential. This meticulous approach, based on an in-depth geological study, creates a velvety and opulent blend that perfectly embodies the estate’s values and vision.
The vintage
The year 2020 in Toscane was marked by a dry and warm winter and spring, followed by heavy rainfall between May and June. The hot summer was punctuated by rain in early September, allowing an early harvest with exceptional grape quality.
Winemaking and ageing
Hand harvesting is carried out in 10 kg crates. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks. The ageing of Il Borro 2020 lasts a total of 18 months: the merlot matures partly in 20 hl barrels, while the cabernet sauvignon and syrah are aged in first and second-fill oak barriques. A 6-month refinement in steel completes this ageing process.
Grape varieties
Merlot (50 %), cabernet sauvignon (35 %) and syrah (15 %).
