Description
The estate
It was in 1977 that the Grattamacco estate was founded in Bolgheri, Tuscany. This "Super Tuscan" has been owned by the Bertarelli family since 2002. Grattamacco is an essential reference for the Bolgheri Superiore appellation and for great Italian wines.
The wine
Grattamacco 2018 is produced from vineyards which soils are made out of calcareous sandstone, marl, limestone flysch and white clay. This terroir enjoys a temperate Mediterranean climate with frequent sea breezes. The vines, which are 25 years old on average, are managed using environmentally friendly methods favouring low yields and high-quality production.
Winemaking and ageing
The hand-harvested grapes are subject to a rigorous sort to preserve only the best berries. The fermentation is spontaneous and carried out in oak barrels, accompanied by manual punching down. Long maceration and gentle extraction to release high-quality, ripe tannins. Ageing lasts for 18 months in oak barrels.
The vintage
2018 was characterised as a vintage where consistent attention given to the vineyard allowed for the production of a high-quality wine. The water reserves accumulated during springtime allowed the vines to develop without water stress throughout July and August, which were marked by a hot and dry climate with no rainfall. Harvests took place all throughout September.
Blend
Grattamacco 2018 is produced from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), Merlot (20%) and Sangiovese.
Tasting
The wine is a bright and beautiful ruby red. This Grattamacco 2018 seduces with its elegance, its aromatic intensity with spicy and fruity notes, the finesse of its tannins and its persistence throughout the tasting.
Food and wine pairings
Grattamacco 2018 goes perfectly with game, wild boar, roasted, braised and stewed meats or even semi-mature cheeses.
