Wine Spectator

Bruce Sanderson

Rich and deeply colored, evoking black cherry, blackberry, plum, tar, wild herb and spice flavors. Dense yet retains a sense of freshness, with refined tannins lining the finish. Nicely integrated and long. Sangiovese and Merlot. Best from 2024 through 2038. 7,916 cases made, 1,000 cases imported.

Decanter

A bright and animated nose exhibits lovely precision of liquorice, red cherry, orange peel and forest floor. The oak is well embedded, imparting Christmas spice to the generous plum-filled core. Supple yet tightly woven tannins meet fresh acidity. 2019 was among my top wines of this 30-year vertical and unquestionably the most finessed. I expect it will show even more of its intricacies with time – although Lamberto says he has already finished drinking his allocation!

Inky in colour, and a beautifully enjoyable wine right from the first sip. There is still the flash of heat that you find in Lucente, but here it comes across as ripe, generous raspberry and loganberry fruits held perfectly in balance by clove, black tea, turmeric, leather and black pepper spices. Concentrated and muscular, this is a delicious vintage of Luce. Nicolo d'Afflitto director, Alessandro Marini winemaker.

Wine Enthusiast

Danielle Callegari

Violets, fresh mint and raspberry come together with reductive notes of tar as well as tobacco, leather and spices—cardamom jumps out in particular—on the complex nose of this wine. Dark berries emerge on the palate, with more herbs, spices, bitter chocolate and coffee grinds. The dusty tannins and searing acid confirm time will elevate this even further.

Description

A fine Tuscan wine that harmoniously blends complexity and elegance

The estate

The Frescobaldi family, a great Florentine family dedicated to the production of fine Tuscan wines, has been established on its historic land for over 1000 years. Their influence considerably increased during the Florentine Republic, when the city's banking industry was developing. Notably, the family took part in large-scale infratruscture projets at the time, such as the Ponte Santa Trinita and the Basilica di Santo Spirito. Located in the Montalcino area, to the southwest of the medieval city, Tenuta Luce Della Vite, one of the Frescobaldi family's estates, produces some of the finest Tuscan and Italian wines.

The vineyard

Frescobaldi - Tenuta Luce della Vite covers 192 hectares, of which 55 are planted with vines, and with an average density of 6,100 vines per hectare. With an altitude of between 350 and 420 metres above sea level, the estate holds one of the region’s highest vineyards.

The soils are rich in pebbles and sediments but poorer in organic materials. This soil type combined with a pleasant sun exposure on its southern slope provide the ideal conditions and lead to the production of fine Sangiovese wines, through a slow ripening process. The Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grape varieties are planted on the lower part of the vineyard, on the clay soils.

The vintage

A cold, dry winter gave way to a cool, rainy spring. These conditions delayed the growth cycle of the vines by almost 10 days. Despite this climate, the flowering period was even. The summer was hot and followed by rainy spells, which advanced an excellent development of the vineyard. September was particularly mild with moderate rainfall, which ensured a slow and regular ripening of the grapes, and thus gave rise to wines with fine tannins, a rare aromatic freshness and a subtle combination between balance and power, all factors that guarantee a great ageing potential.

Winemaking and ageing

Fermentation for 12 days in cement vats. Skin contact maceration for 22 days. Malolactic fermentation in barrels. Aged for 24 months in barrels (80% new, 20% one wine).

Blend

Merlot
Sangiovese.
