Description
The roundness and elegance of a Sicilian wine from the Donnafugata estate
The estate
Founded in 1983, the name of the Donnafugata estate, "fleeing woman" in Italian, recalls the exile of Queen Maria Carolina of Naples at the home of a local prince, as Napoleon seized the city.
Giacomo Rallo, the founder of this estate in north-west Sicily, is the fourth generation of the family which, since 1851, has produced wine renowned for its great quality.
Spread across five different sites, the Donnafugata estate takes its individuality from its many various terroirs, which confer into each wine a unique style reflecting the richness of the Sicilian soil.
The vineyard
The Isolano Dolce&Gabbana Limited Edition 2020 from Domaine Donnafugata is a Sicilian wine stemming from vines planted on the north face of Etna, between Randazzo and Castiglione di Sicilia, at an altitude varying between 700 and 750 metres. This northern part of the volcano is characterised by lower rainfall than the other sides of Etna. The summers are cool, with big variations in day and night temperatures. The volcanic soils are sandy and rich in minerals. The vines are grown in the traditional method of "albero," or gobelet/bush training, positioned vertically on terraces enclosed by dry walls of lava stone.
The wine
Isolano Dolce&Gabbana Limited Edition 2020 from Domaine Donnafugata in the Etna Bianco appellation is the fruit of the encounter between two iconic brands and global ambassadors of Sicilian culture and the excellence of "Made in Italy" thanks to their shared passion for their homeland. Dolce&Gabbana reclaims the colours of Sicily in the artwork of the label and the case. The designs are inspired by geometric shapes of a traditional Sicilian cart, in traditional red, green, blue and yellow. At the back there appears a smoking Etna.
The vintage
The 2020 vintage was characterised by normal weather conditions: a cold winter, a mild spring and a summer with plenty of heat.
