Description

The Expression and Structure of a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

An emblematic property of the prestigious Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation on the Right Bank of the Bordeaux region, Couvent des Jacobins is one of those lively places full of history.

The new vintage Couvent des Jacobins 2017 celebrates the mastery of the winemaking process of a property that has formed part of the viticultural landscape of Saint-Émilion for nearly 7 centuries.

Here, tradition is combined with modernity in an approach that also respects the natural environment. 2017 marks the second consecutive year at Domaine Couvent des Jacobins with certain products certified "organic farming" and the aim to be fully certified AB by 2020.

With a blend largely dominated by Merlot (80%), complemented by Cabernet Franc (12%), the Couvent des Jacobins 2017 contains a higher proportion of Petit Verdot (8%) than other vintages. Since 2010, Petit Verdot has indeed been combined with other grape varieties of the estate, becoming a real signature of the wines of the Couvent des Jacobins.

Although the frenzy of the frost at the end of April 2017 did not spare the vineyard, the most beautiful plots of the Convent of the Jacobins survived and were included in this new vintage. Thanks to fruit that arrived to the cellar at optimal ripeness and in perfect health conditions, the Couvent des Jacobins 2017 displays a beautiful dense purple colour. An intense expression and complexity are the first impressions left on the nose. The typical characteristics of the grape varieties are revealed through a powerful and concentrated aromatic bouquet with generous notes of black fruits, marking the presence of Merlot. Meanwhile, the woody and spicy notes signal the contribution of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. On the palate, the attack evolves into a dense and rich texture, revealing structured tannins with a velvety grain, which unfold into a persistent finish. The wine leaves the palate with fruity flavours and oak, echoing the barrels in which the wine was aged. A Grand Cru Classé from Saint-Émilion with a strong personality.
