Decanter

A softly sweet and savoury nose. The texture here is great, smooth and satisfying. This is a dark, almost sticky style with sweet liquorice and chewy blackcurrants lifted by a vein of minty freshness. Firm and muscular – there is clear power here, but it is also quite suave with high acidity and generous fruit. Spiced finish with some liquorice freshness. Appealing.

Aromas of currants, blackberries, bark, toasted oak, walnut husk and chocolate orange. Medium- to full-bodied with a rich, flavorful and layered palate. Ripe, well-integrated tannins. Delicious finish. Merlot and cabernet franc. Drink from 2024.

Vinous

Antonio Galloni

A wine of stature and finesse, the 2019 La Tour Figeac is regal in its bearing. An exotic mélange of dark red fruit, kirsch, mocha, dried herbs, licorice, spice and rose petal soars out of the glass. The Cabernet Franc is especially evident, just as it was en primeur. La Tour Figeac is deep and beautifully layered, yet remains medium in body and refined, with notable raciness that is so appealing. A major sleeper for the year, La Tour Figeac is a knock-out.

Fresh, fruity, silky, soft and refined, the wine expresses a beautiful sense of purity on the nose and palate as well as poise and grace. The elegant finish caps everything off nicely. Drink from 2022-2034.

Falstaff

Falstaff

Dark ruby garnet with purple reflections and a lightly ochre rim. Plum fruit on the nose is underlaid with fine herbal spices, preserved heart cherries, tobacco and candied orange zest. The palate is powerful, juicy and sweet, with a hint of nougat and firm tannins. The pleasant sweetness echoes on the finish which has very good length and a mineral aftertaste. A full-bodied food companion with certain ageing potential.

Lots of ripe black cherries, mulberries, Christmas spice, incense, and dried flower notes emerge from the 2019 Château La Tour Figeac, a classy, medium- to full-bodied Saint-Emilion with supple, finely polished tannins, terrific overall balance, and a great finish. This wonderful 2019 already offers loads of pleasure and will keep for 15–20 years, easily.

Weinwisser

70% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, 37 hl/ha. Deep purple with a violet rim. Alluring bouquet of ripe blackberries and violets, followed by sour cherry juice and licorice. On the elegant palate, a silky texture and cocoa-like tannins; finely detailed thanks to perfectly supportive drive, giving the wine this “lightness of being.” Focused finish with crushed wild cherries, sloe skin and profound minerality. On the same level as last year – chapeau!

The high levels of Cabernet Franc are clear in the fragrant violet notes and the austere tannins, and you find plenty of lift and grace through the palate. Blueberry and white pepper spice, with creamy cappuccino and brioche. Tasted twice, enjoyable and easy to recommend. 20 hl/ha yield, 3rd year of organic conversion.

The Wine Independent

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

A blend of 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc, the 2019 La Tour Figeac is medium to deep garnet-purple in color. It leaps with vivacious notes of black raspberries and wild blueberries plus hints of iron ore, truffles, and clove oil. The medium to full-bodied palate is muscular and sturdy, with firm, chewy tannins and a mineral-laced finish.

[ Primeurs 2019 Scores: 91 ] Delightful hints of violet and marshmallow. A silky attack that extends harmoniously into a caressing mid-palate, wrapped in Merlot. The balance carries through to a peppermint finish.

La RVF

The supple florality of the 2019 already charms with its crunchy, expressive and digestible character, aligned with immense potential. For now, the wine remains in the reticence of its youth; however, a lightly graphite weave emerges behind a subtle tannin.

The nose is elegant, aromatic, and offers complexity as well as a certain controlled power, with a stretched profile. It reveals notes of wild blackcurrant, wild blackberry and, more lightly, pepper, combined with fine touches of woodland strawberry, a hint of spices, and a subtle touch of licorice, tobacco, flowers, plus a subtle almost-fig note, cumin and cinnamon. The palate is fruity and balanced, delivering juiciness, a tangy backbone, freshness, good definition, a certain gourmandise, tension, precision, a measured richness, an airy feel, a touch of fresh creaminess, and a lovely tangy thread. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of creamy blackberry, woodland strawberry and, more slightly, fresh fig, joined by hints of crushed/creamy blue fruits, cinnamon, almond, as well as a subtle touch of blond tobacco, chocolate and saffron (in the background). The tannins are precise. There is a small toasted/crushed almond character on the finish, with persistence.

Dark, intense colour. Very aromatic, delicate nose with ripe fruit. Soft palate, very fruity and flavourful, with depth and a touch more body than usual, especially in this gentle vintage. Lovely, savoury length.

93–95. Barrel Sample. This organic estate has made a lush, darkly tannic wine. Its broad fruit is textured with generous tannins that are bolstered by acidity. It has great potential for the cellar.

Description

The freshness and elegance of a Grand Cru Classé de Saint-Émilion

The estate
Grand Cru Classé de Saint-Émilion, the Château La Tour Figeac was founded in 1879 when it separated from Château Figeac to which it had been attached. Since 1994, Otto Maximilian Rettenmaier has been at the head of the estate.

The vineyard
The vineyard of Château La Tour Figeac enjoys an exceptional location in Saint-Émilion, on the edge of the Pomerol appellation. The 14.6 hectares of vineyard are located between Château Cheval Blanc and Château Figeac. The vines, averaging 37 years old, are planted on a beautiful gravelly-sandy terroir resting on deep clay. Since 1997, the vineyard of Château La Tour Figeac has been managed ecologically with the implementation of organic and biodynamic practices. Herbal teas and natural preparations are used to care for the vines while considering the entire ecosystem. The estate has gone even further in its respect for the environment and the vineyard by planting cereals between the vine rows to strengthen the soils and limit erosion.

The vintage
After a particularly mild winter, a wet, cool spring, the summer of 2019 was marked by high temperatures with record heat. Late July rains helped limit water stress on the vineyard. The harvest at Château La Tour Figeac therefore took place from 20 September to 3 October 2019. In the vineyard, the estate’s technical teams carried out light green harvests, which enabled good maturity. 2019 marks the second official year of conversion to organic farming. In the cellar, 2019 was also a decisive year as the barrel cellar was completely renovated. La Tour Figeac chose to invest in 400-liter barrels and amphorae. These measures are designed to enhance the finesse of the estate wines’ tannins while preserving a high purity of fruit expression.

Blend
This Château La Tour Figeac 2019 is a blend of Merlot (65%) and Cabernet Franc (35%).
