Jancis Robinson

Tamlyn Currin

Certified organic and biodynamic. 100% Pinot Noir from Ambonnay. Larmandier-Bernier's first Blanc de Noirs. Grippy and phenolic and chewy. It’s all pith and peel and tension. Last year I described it as a ‘cliff face of a wine’ and I'll stand by that. It’s spitting salt and lime peel and green nut skin. It’s more like a red wine in terms of structure. Pair with steak! The 2015 Brut Nature Blanc de Noirs 1er Cru is a new wine in this range that emerges from the deeper clay soils found in the southern part of Vertus. A brawny, potent Champagne, the Blanc de Noirs is endowed with tons of depth and some angularity that needs time to soften. It will be interesting to see where this goes in more favorable years. Zero dosage. Disgorged: May, 2022.

Description

A Blanc de Noirs champagne that entices with elegance and aromatic richness

The estate

Located on the Côte des Blancs terroir, the Larmandier-Bernier Champagne House has been cultivating vines for over 8 generations. Since 1988, Pierre Larmandier has been at the head of the 16-hectare family estate with the ambition of producing exceptional vintages that authentically express the purity of the Champagne terroirs.

The vines are 33 years old on average and have been cultivated for more than 20 years using biodynamic practices and with the utmost respect for the terroir. No chemical products, ploughing, indigenous yeasts, long ageing on lees in barrels and tuns, these are the determining choices that give Larmandier-Bernier wines a rare and unique minerality and expression of the terroir.

The wine

The Brut Nature 2015 from Larmandier-Bernier is the house’s first Blanc de Noirs. This wine has been developed from old vines planted on the vineyards of Vertus, an illustrious Champagne terroir.

Winemaking and ageing

2015 was a vintage which fully expresses the aromatic richness of pinot noir. Because of this, Maison Larmandier-Bernier made the choice to carry out a vinification partly in rosé and in white. Vinification on lees in casks and in a large barrel over 11 months. This Brut Nature champagne benefited from an additional ageing on laths for six years. Disgorgement in May 2022.

Blend

This Blanc de Noirs Brut Nature 2015 from Larmandier-Bernier is made from 100% pinot noir.
