The structure and richness of an Italian red wine
The estate
Founded in 1968 following the merger of 5 estates, Castellare di Castellina is among the finest references for Italian wines. The estate spans 80 hectares, including 33 hectares of vines planted on limestone galestro soils, between 370 and 430 meters above sea level. Paolo Panerai has chosen an exclusive commitment to native Tuscan grape varieties, particularly sangiovese. The estate stands out notably for aging its grand cru I Sodi di S. Niccolò in the crypt of a 14th-century church.
The vineyard
The vines of this Chianti Classico are planted in Castellina in Chianti, between 350 and 400 meters above sea level, on limestone soils. Yields are controlled at 60 quintals per hectare, enabling grapes of excellent concentration. Harvest takes place in October.
The vintage
The 2022 vintage in Tuscany benefited from favorable conditions, with spring rains that built up good water reserves. The summer was marked by significant temperature variations between day and night. Rainfall in mid-August allowed for optimal ripening of the grapes.
Winemaking and aging
Winemaking for this Chianti Classico 2022 takes place in stainless-steel tanks. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged for 7 months in 2.25- and 5-hectoliter French oak barrels, followed by 7 months of bottle aging before release.
Grape varieties
Sangioveto (95%) and canaiolo (5%).
