The Structure and Persistence of a Chianti Classico Riserva by Castellare

The estate

Founded in the 1960s by Paolo Panerai, a Milanese publisher with a passion for oenology, following the consolidation of several estates, Castellare di Castellina spans 33 hectares of vineyards in the heart of Chianti Classico in Tuscany. Located on southeast-facing hillsides between 370 and 430 meters in altitude, the estate exclusively cultivates indigenous Tuscan grape varieties on Galestro limestone soils. Still run by Paolo Panerai, Castellare stands out for its pioneering approach to sustainability.

The vineyard

Produced since 1993, Il Poggiale is a Chianti Classico wine from a vineyard located in Castellina in Chianti, between 350 and 400 meters in altitude on limestone soils.

The vintage

The 2022 vintage in Tuscany was marked by a warm season beginning in late spring. Summer drought was tempered by water reserves built up in spring. Rainfall in mid-August helped moderate temperatures. Sangiovese was harvested slightly earlier than usual, around September 10.

Winemaking and aging

Il Poggiale Riserva 2022 is vinified in stainless-steel tanks. The wine is then aged in barrels, 20% of which are new, for a period of 12 to 18 months. An additional 12 months of bottle aging precedes release, allowing the wine to harmonize its structure and aromas.

Grape varieties

Sangioveto (90%), canaiolo (5%), ciliegiolo (5%).
