Description

The richness and elegance of a Franciacorta rosé wine

The estate

When Annamaria Clementi acquired a small house that was poised on a hill in Ebursco in 1964 and planted vines there, her son Maurizio's life changed. At the age of just 15, the young man stumbled upon the fabulous Franciacorta terroir. Fascinated by the Champagne method, he embarked on a pursuit of excellence that has never ceased to drive Ca' del Bosco. Maurizio Zanella became an emblematic figure in the revival of Italian wines, producing some of the most renowned red, white and sparkling organic wines in Italy. There is no doubt that with this talented winemaker at the helm, the revolutionary estate has many more chapters to write.

The vineyard

Ca' del Bosco's Cuvée Prestige Edizione 44 Extra Brut Rosé is a Lombardy wine made from 18 different parcels, 12 of which are Pinot Nero (Pinot Noir), 31 years old on average and located in the municipalities of Erbusco, Adro and Passirano, and 6 parcels of Chardonnay, 26 years old on average, located in the municipalities of Erbusco, Cazzago San Martino, Iseo and Passirano.

The wine

This Franciacorta rosé comprises a blend of Pinot Noir from the 2019 vintage and 10% Chardonnay from the reserve wines of the 2018 and 2019 harvests.

The vintage

Although 2019 began with a mild, dry winter that favoured an early start to the vine's cycle, significant amounts of rainfall and cool temperatures were recorded from mid-April to mid-May. These conditions had an impact on both the flowering period and the development of the grapes. The mild weather after May 15th led to an even fruit set. June, considered as the driest month to be recorded over the last 20 years, preceded a month of July whose lack of humidity led to water stress. The rainy spells at the beginning of August saved the day. Harvesting began on August 20th with sunny weather and pleasant temperatures.

Vinification and ageing

The hand-picked grapes are rigorously sorted and cooled before being vinified separately based on the grape variety. The grapes are then soaked in a "berry spa" before being dried.

The Pinot Noir grapes are vatted by gravity flow. Maceration for 24 to 36 hours until the desired pinkish colour is reached. Separation of the skins before fermentation in small barrels and steel vats.

Traditional vinification of Chardonnay with whole-bunch pressing. Separate fermentation in vats for the most qualitative must fractions. Initial ageing period for 7 months before blending, followed by additional ageing in bottles in the estate's underground cellars for approximately 30 months. Lastly, disgorging is carried out in an oxygen-free environment to prevent oxidation and avoid the addition of sulphites in order to produce a highly pure Cuvée Prestige.

The blend

The Cuvée Prestige Edizione 44 Extra Brut Rosé by Ca' del Bosco comprises a blend of Pinot Noir (80%) and Chardonnay (20%).
