A Tuscan white of remarkable freshness and aromatic intensity by Ornellaia
The estate
Founded in 1981 by Marquis Lodovico Antinori in Bolgheri, Tuscany, Tenuta dell'Ornellaia is now owned by the Frescobaldi family, winegrowers for seven centuries. The estate spans 115 hectares of vineyards. Under the direction of Axel Heinz since 2005, the tenuta practices sustainable, environmentally friendly viticulture. Its exceptional terroir, between the Mediterranean Sea and the hills of the Maremma, produces Italian wines among the most prestigious in the world, internationally recognized for their elegance and depth.
The vineyard
Poggio Alle Gazze comes from plots located in the Bolgheri region, in Tuscany, benefiting from an exceptional terroir between Mediterranean maritime influences and the relief of the Maremma. This privileged geographical location gives the white grapes optimal ripeness while preserving their natural freshness.
The vintage
The 2024 vintage is marked by its balance and dynamism. The year begins with a mild, rainy winter, followed by a warm, sunny summer from late June. Beneficial storms occur in mid-August, bringing welcome freshness. Harvest takes place in September under alternating sunny, cool, and rainy conditions, yielding grapes with great freshness and exceptional aromatic intensity.
Winemaking and aging
The Poggio Alle Gazze 2024 harvest is carried out manually in the early morning hours in 15 kg crates, followed by immediate cooling of the grapes. After meticulous selection, the bunches undergo slow, gentle pressing to prevent oxidation, followed by 24 hours of settling. Fermentation takes place at a maximum temperature of 20°C without malolactic fermentation, in various vessels: barrels (25% new, 25% once-used), stainless steel and concrete tanks, amphorae, and glass globes (50%). Aging continues for 8 months on fine lees with regular bâtonnage, followed by 8 months of bottle aging before release.
Grape varieties
55% Sauvignon Blanc, 40% Vermentino, 3% Sémillon, 2% Viognier.
