Italy is one of the main wine producer, consumer and exportator in the world. The country has 533 appellations (all DOCG, DOC, IGT) spread over about 690 000 hectares : the area of its vineyard comes close to 9% of the world vineyard. Appellations are spread on the whole territory, from North to South, from Est to West, as for the iconic regions of Piedmont or Tuscany. Italy counts more than 400 different grape varietals as the Nebbiolo or the Sangiovese. The quality of the wines produced in Italy have made the country a key and legendary region in the wine international landscape.

Valdobbiadene Prosecco DOCG, pure Glera from Veneto
The Prosecco Superiore Valdobbiadene from the Prestige collection of Mionetto is an Extra-dry sparkling. This pure Glera wine was vinified according to Charmat method: in pressure tank. The harmonious and refined nose gives off green apple, acacia and wisteria fragrances. On the palate, the Valdobbiadene Prosecco DOCG remains floral and fruity with a fine and persistent effervescence.

Treviso from the Wallstreet Journal. This extra dry but gentle Mionetto Prosecco produced of 100% Glera grapes of the Treviso region offers creamy and persistent bubbles and abundant fruity hints of acacia, honey, citrus fruits and almonds, characteristic of the grape variety of origin. Grapes are softly pressed and then undergo the sparkling process, the Charmat method, in large pressure-tight tanks. The elegant and refreshing acidity is perfectly paired with intense and fruity flavors as apples and peaches. This Treviso Prosecco from Mionetto is a versatile sparkling wine, ideal as an aperitif and excellent with fish, mollusc and shellfish appetizers.

Mionetto's NV Prosecco Brut is a solid, reliable offering with good varietal character and balance. Still, it would be nice to see this large house make more ambitious wines. I recently saw Mionetto's Prosecco being poured in one of Manhattan's most fashionable hotel bars and couldn't help thinking that Prosecco can be so much more. If the region's top producers are truly serious about protecting the integrity of the Prosecco brand, the first place to start is by putting a higher quality product in the bottle. The 2014 La Massa shows a brilliant ruby color and freshly delineated aromas of cherry, fresh blackberry, light spice and crushed mineral. There is a very attractive note of wild underbrush or bramble that adds a touch of zest and crispness. This vintage is less intense compared to previous editions, although it does show attractive elegance. The blend is 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Alicante Bouschet. The 2013 Maremma Toscana Ornello is a mid-range wine that sees Sangioveto blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. The Syrah makes all the difference. In fact, this wine sports a unique label design that stands apart from the other Rocca di Frassinello labels, precisely because this is the only wine made with Syrah. Ornello is a rich and succulent expression that is redolent of dark fruit, pressed blackberry and spice. There are some savory elements as well with cured leather and barbecue smoke. The 2012 Solaia is the ultimate comfort wine: It serves as a beautiful monument to the potential of Italian wine. Let me give you some context. My lukewarm review of the 2011 vintage caused some heads to turn. Happily, the previous vintage has served as a springboard for this current release. Both 2011 and 2012 come from hot climatic conditions, but these wines are very different in style and content. The 2011 heat softened the lines that make up the varietal identity of this celebrated Tuscan blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese. Those lines are presented in sharp focus with the 2012 edition. The nose is redolent of dark berry, crushed mineral, plum, spice and touch of white pepper. Prosecco di Treviso DOC from Veneto
This Prosecco Treviso Extra Dry is pure Glera from the Treviso region. It is part of the Mionetto Prestige collection. It exhibits a straw-coloured yellow hue with green highlights and fine effervescence. The nose seduces by fruity but also floral aromas such as honey, acacia and apricot. On the palate, this Prosecco di Treviso DOC of Mionetto is refreshing, always on charming notes of fruits with a fine and brisk bubble.

The 2015 Bolgheri Rosso is mostly Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. The Merlot is harvested on the early side in order to preserve acidity, meanwhile the other varieties are harvested a bit later to add softness and roundness. In order to highlight the crispness of the fruit, one-fourth of the mass is aged in cement and the rest goes into various types of neutral barrel. This terrific wine boasts firm lines and a soft, cherry-driven core. The finish offers a quirky collection of exotic spice aromas that are mild and subtle. Some 130,000 bottles were produced. The 2014 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione San Lorenzo flaunts its importance. It boasts confidence and an outward-looking personality that comes as a refreshing surprise. Like all Gran Selezione wines, it is released 30 months after January 1st following the harvest. That means it still has a few more months to go before it hits the market. This expression of Sangiovese shows depth and power with ripe fruit tones of cherry and forest berry. Like many of the other high profile wines I preview-tasted from the difficult 2014 vintage, I am delighted and surprised by the elegant and soft nature of the mature tannins. Marchesi di Barolo has harnessed the best attributes of the vintage to make the 2010 Barolo Riserva. The wine offers elegance and grace, but it also shows strong determination to push it forward over the palate. It opens to a bright garnet color with aromas of dried berry, licorice, campfire smoke and balsam herb. Past editions are perhaps more accessible in character, but this wine is more austere instead. Benefitting from southeast exposures, the 2010 Barolo Sarmassa is a deeply layered and concentrated wine with immediate aromas of spice, mahogany, ripe cherry, pressed blackberry and shaved truffle. Barolo Sarmassa offers a very attractive smoothness that is especially evident on the finish. The wine fades slowly leaving a pretty, vanilla aftertaste. Drink: 2016-2028.
