Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for Grattamacco 2023
Tasting
Appearance
This wine displays a deep, brilliant ruby-red colour.
Nose
The bouquet reveals great aromatic depth, with notes of ripe red fruit such as cherry and pomegranate. These are delicately underscored by floral touches and earthy nuances reminiscent of the Mediterranean maquis.
Palate
Dynamic and balanced, the palate shows a vigorous structure supported by lovely tension. It stands out for its remarkable freshness, assertive mineral backbone and tannins that are both fine and ripe, leading to a long, elegant finish.
Food and Wine Pairings
This great red wine pairs beautifully with grilled red meats or red meats in sauce, such as dry-aged rib of beef or an herb-crusted rack of lamb. It will also elevate game dishes, such as wild boar stew, as well as aged hard cheeses like Pecorino.
Serving and Ageing
To fully appreciate Grattamacco 2023, serve it at a temperature between 18 and 20°C, after decanting for one to two hours. With excellent ageing potential, it can be cellared for approximately 10 to 20 years.
The Elegance of a Great Tuscan Wine by Grattamacco
The Estate
Founded in 1977 by Piermario Meletti Cavallari, Grattamacco is a pioneering estate located in Tuscany, in the hills of Bolgheri. Now run by Claudio Tipa and the Tipa-Bertarelli family, the property covers 80 hectares, 28 of which are planted with vines and farmed organically. A true benchmark in the region, this historic estate has made its mark by playing an active role in the recognition of the area's great red wines, skilfully combining agronomic innovation with deep respect for its exceptional terroir.
The Vineyard
The vines used to produce this Bolgheri Superiore thrive at altitudes ranging from 100 to 200 metres, facing the sea. With an average age of 25 years, they benefit from a Mediterranean climate tempered by sea breezes and sheltered by the surrounding woodland. The distinctive terroir is made up of calcareous sandstone, white sodic clays and fossil-rich flysch marl. The vineyard is farmed for low yields, with the utmost respect for the environment, thanks to practices that have been certified organic for more than twenty years.
Winemaking and Ageing
The grapes for Grattamacco 2023 are harvested by hand and rigorously sorted in the vineyard. Fermentation takes place spontaneously in open oak vats, accompanied by gentle, regular manual punch-downs. A long maceration allows for slow extraction to refine the tannic structure. The wine is then aged for 18 months in French barriques before being bottled in July 2025, without filtration.
Grape Varieties
This wine is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 15% Sangiovese.
