An elegant, beautifully balanced Super Tuscan by Gaja

The estate

Created in 1996 by Angelo Gaja, Ca' Marcanda symbolizes the expansion of the prestigious Piedmontese family into Tuscany, more precisely in Bolgheri. This fifth-generation family estate spans 300 acres of vineyards spread between Bolgheri and Bibbona. The name « Ca' Marcanda » means, in the Piedmontese dialect, « the house of endless negotiations ». Specializing in Super Tuscans, the estate primarily grows cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot and syrah. Since its first vintage in 2000, Ca' Marcanda has embodied Gaja excellence applied to the Tuscan terroir.

The vineyard

The Promis vineyards are located in the communes of Bolgheri and Bibbona in Tuscany. The plots benefit from dark soils rich in limestone and clay, which give these Italian wines their distinctive character. Set at the foot of the Metalliferous Hills, these clay-limestone terroirs encourage slow grape ripening, producing wines that are fresh and endowed with lovely natural acidity.

The vintage

The year 2023 began with a rainy winter and spring. July and August were marked by high temperatures and drought, with peaks reaching 42°C. September brought significant day-to-night temperature swings. These climatic conditions yielded grapes with vibrant acidity, fine elegance, a balanced structure, moderate alcohol levels and smooth tannins. Harvest took place from August 20 to October 10.

Vinification and aging

Each grape variety in Promis 2023 ferments and macerates separately in order to preserve its individual characteristics. Aging takes place over 12 months in oak barrels, followed by a few months of bottle aging before release.

Grape varieties

Cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon, petit verdot.
