Description

Characteristics and Tasting Tips of Gorgona 2024 by Frescobaldi - Gorgona

Tasting

Color
The color displays a pale straw hue with beautiful brilliance.

Nose
The bouquet reveals remarkable complexity and elegance. It opens with floral notes of broom and honeysuckle, accompanied by aromas of ripe exotic fruits and citrus evoking bergamot and citron. These are followed by scents of Mediterranean herbs such as rosemary, sage, and immortelle, before concluding with characteristic iodine notes.

Palate
On the palate, the wine expresses beautiful salinity and remarkable freshness. The persistence is exceptional, with perfect coherence between the aromas perceived on the nose and those revealed on the palate. The finish is distinguished by its length.

Serving and Ageing
Gorgona 2024 is best enjoyed at a serving temperature between 10 and 12°C. It can be enjoyed until around 2027.

The Vivacity and Elegance of a Tuscan White Wine with a Unique Story

The estate
Created in 2012, Frescobaldi-Gorgona was born from a unique collaboration between the prestigious Frescobaldi family, now led by its 30th generation, and the inmates of the penal colony on the island of Gorgona in Tuscany. The project aims at the social reintegration of inmates through viticultural training, making Gorgona the only wine in the world produced on a European prison island.

The vineyard

The vineyard spans 2 hectares on the island of Gorgona, arranged in an amphitheater overlooking the sea. The vines benefit from an east-facing exposure, sheltered from the winds, on ferruginous soils rich in iron. Originally planted in 1999, the vineyard was expanded in 2015 and 2018. This appellation Costa Toscana offers a unique insular terroir where the Vermentino and Ansonica varieties thrive in a preserved maritime environment.

The vintage
Winter proved to be one of the mildest in recent years, with temperatures between 12 and 15°C and few cold days. January was dry while February saw many rainy days. Budburst for Vermentino occurred around mid-late March, that of Ansonica later. April began with heavy rains before cooling in the second half, slowing vine growth. June was cool with below-average temperatures. July and August were warm, tempered by the maritime influence, with little rainfall. Harvest took place during the second week of September for Vermentino and from the second week of October for Ansonica, later than in previous years due to a cool September allowing for slow and progressive ripening.

Vinification and Aging
Gorgona 2024 is produced using traditional methods under the supervision of Frescobaldi's oenologists and agronomists, with the participation of the island's inmates as part of the social reintegration project.

Grape Varieties
Vermentino and Ansonica.
