Description

A Pomerol with Red and Black Fruit Aromas Intermingled with Graphite

Château Trotanoy gets its atypical name from its former nickname "Trop Ennui," which refers to the challenging nature of its Pomerol terroir. The estate was purchased by the Moueix family in 1953 and has, in recent years, become one of the region's top wines. The property comprises 7.2 hectares (17.8 acres) of vineyard, planted with roughly 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. The vines, around 35 years old on average, grow in the gravel and clay soils of the Pomerol plateau. Sustainable methods are used to care for these vineyards. The soil is tilled in four different ways and vine growth management is adapted to the climatic conditions of the vintage. After severe pruning during the winter, the team also carries out extensive crop-thinning and de-leafing, even stripping away clusters to reduce yield and help the grapes fully ripen in time for the harvest. The fruit is manually sorted in the vineyard and optically sorted at the winery. Vinification takes place in thermoregulated concrete vats, and the maceration and extraction processes are kept very gentle. The wines are matured 16-18 months in French oak barrels (around 50% new).

The Château Trotanoy 2017 blends of 90% Merlot with 10% Cabernet Franc, displaying a gorgeous deep crimson colour in the glass. On the nose, this wine is very expressive, offering red and black fruit (cherries, redcurrant, kirsch), interwoven with the estate's signature touches of pencil lead and flint and smoke. On the palate, this Pomerol shows off a core of powerful, juicy fruit, along with plush and focused tannins. This is a Trotanoy with great density and power, to be enjoyed 2025-2050.
