Description

A Saint-Emilion Grand Cru red wine in a fresh vintage

The estate

A Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, Château Roylland takes its name from "La Lande du Roy" meaning ‘’The Land of the King’’. This estate, founded at the time of Eleanor of Aquitaine, borders some of the finest growths in the Saint-Emilion appellation.

The vineyard

The vineyard of this Saint-Émilion Grand Cru is managed using sustainable methods, including natural inter-row grass cover-cropping. The 5-hectare vineyard spreads over clay and sandy-clay soils. The vines are 15 years old on average.

Vinification and ageing

The grapes are harvested by hand in crates. Sorting in the vineyard, which is crucial for this challenging vintage, is carried out by a competent team who were all trained by the estate. A second sorting is carried out using a densimetric sorter after destemming, followed by a final manual sorting. Vinification is then carried out in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. Gentle extraction with light pumping over in order to respect the fruit aromas and to obtain fine and soft tannins. Vatting time for 20 to 24 days. Aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, 40% of which are new. For this 2021 vintage, the yield is well below the usual average with only 15 hectolitres per hectare.

The blend

Château Roylland 2021 is a rather unique blend for the property and comprises 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc.
