Wine definitely too oaky. Dry tannins on the finish.

Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for Château Roylland 2002

Tasting Notes

Appearance
This red wine reveals a beautiful vivid ruby hue, reflecting fine depth and careful concentration without excessive evolution.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with floral notes and expressive fruit, largely dominated by the imprint of Merlot. The whole is underscored by a delicate, pleasant oakiness, bringing subtle touches of spice and vanilla that blend perfectly with the fruit.

Palate
From the very first sip, the palate proves particularly supple and silky. The texture then develops into a dense, well-structured body, supported by present yet polished tannins. The finish, quite firm in its youth, promised to soften harmoniously over time.

Food and Wine Pairing

This great gastronomic wine pairs wonderfully with grilled or roasted red meats, such as rack of lamb, beef fillet, or duck breast. It will also enhance dishes in sauce, roasted feathered game accompanied by mushrooms, as well as long-matured pressed cheeses such as an aged Comté or a Salers.

Serving and Cellaring

To fully appreciate the Château Roylland 2002, serving at a temperature of 16°C is recommended. Allowing it to breathe in the glass beforehand, or gentle decanting, helps release its full aromatic complexity. Designed to evolve favorably, this wine offered a cellaring potential of 2 to 8 years, with its optimal tasting window extending until the early 2010s, although perfectly cellared bottles can still offer a wonderful experience today.

The Elegance and Richness of a Great Saint-Émilion Wine

The Estate

Located in the renowned Bordeaux region, Château Roylland traces its historical origins back to the 12th century, though the modern vineyard estate was established and structured in 1989. Since 2010, Martine and Jean-Bernard Chambard have owned this vineyard. They have brought fresh momentum to the estate, combining modernized infrastructure, the development of wine tourism, and a strong commitment to biodiversity, elevating this wine to the level of its most illustrious neighbors.

The Vineyard

This Saint-Émilion vineyard covers a modest area of five hectares and is divided into two distinct terroirs that give it its uniqueness. Part of the vines thrive on clay-sandy soils at the foot of the slope in the Mazerat cove, while the other part grows on the clay-limestone plateau of Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes. Cultivated with controlled yields, the vines benefit from sustainable farming practices that encourage natural grass cover and exclude the use of herbicides. Harvesting is done exclusively by hand, followed by a rigorous double sorting of the grapes.

Winemaking and Aging

To craft the Château Roylland 2002, the grapes were vinified in large-capacity stainless steel and concrete tanks. The wine then underwent careful aging in oak barrels, a third of which were renewed each year. Before bottling, this vintage was fined but not filtered, a demanding technical choice that preserves its full texture and aromatic depth.

Grape Varieties

This wine is crafted from a blend dominated by Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc.
