Description
A vintage champagne imbued with finesse and elegance
The estate
The Champagne Moët & Chandon House was founded in 1743 by Claude Moët, a visionary wine merchant, who quickly established it as a benchmark among European courts. A few years later, his grandson, Jean-Rémy Moët, developed the international renown of the house.
Jean-Rémy Moët notably created the House's emblematic cuvée, Moët Imperial, in honour of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, who visited the estate on several occasions and is said to have invented, with his troops, the gesture of sabring bottles of Moët & Chandon champagne to celebrate a victory.
Owned by the LVMH group since 1987, the house crafts, from a rigorous selection of Champagne terroirs, singular cuvées recognised far beyond the borders for their quality and seductive personality.
The wine
Crafted only in the greatest years in Champagne, the Grand Vintage is a free and personal interpretation of an exceptional year by the Cellar Master of Moët & Chandon.
The vintage
A particularly unstable winter, alternating between rain, snow, cold, mildness, sunshine and greyness, preceded a warm spring punctuated by a hailstorm in May. The summer was hot before a "tropical" late season combining high temperatures in early September with heavy rainfall.
Vinification and ageing
This 1999 vintage champagne benefits from an extended maturation time in the cellars.
Blend
Pinot Noir (38%), Chardonnay (31%) and Meunier (31%).
