Decanter

No dosage for this cuvée, which is made with the three main grape varieties from Champagne. Red berries, herbs, and citrus aromas, with jasmine touches. Pure and clean, energetic and tense, the palate is fresh and elegant.

James Suckling

Raspberries, nectarines, lemon pie, caramel and some toasted vanilla on the nose. Creamy and buttery feel on the palate with velvety, soft bubbles. Dry, yet with generous caramel and ripe-fruit notes. Disgorged in May 2022. Drink now.

Andreas Larsson

Pale golden with a copper hue and young, vivid mousse. Vinous nose with a slight oak/nutty presence, hazelnut, white flower, some pastry notes and pale stone fruit. The palate shows medium weight; flavour-wise it feels more Pinot-driven, with a nice austere backbone of acidity and no sugar, offering crisp fruit, crushed apricot, some nutty notes, an integrated creaminess and a long, pure finish.

Bettane+Desseauve

Very pure, airy and floral, with an elegant palate for this perfect aperitif, which stays fresh and particularly easy to drink, with a well-defined lemony finish.

La RVF

An open profile with notes of baked apple and autumnal foliage; the nose shows a delicate lactic touch from the wood, and the whole is coherent. The palate is straightforward with a structured backbone.

Description

Alfred Gratien crafts a lively and aromatic Brut Nature Champagne

The estate

Alfred Gratien founded his eponymous house in 1864. Located in Épernay, at the heart of Champagne, the Maison Alfred Gratien has, since its inception, championed a rigorous selection of grapes, oak barrel vinification, and limited production volumes to preserve the original character of the terroir and showcase the freshness of its wines.

The expertise of the Champagne Alfred Gratien House has been passed down from father to son over several generations, contributing to the unique style of each cuvée.

The vineyard

Alfred Gratien oversees a 1.56-hectare vineyard of vines classified as Grands Crus and Premiers Crus, located on two iconic terroirs of Champagne, the Côte des Blancs and the Montagne de Reims. The house complements its supply with purchases from around sixty growers who have remained loyal to the house for generations.

Winemaking and aging

Only the first pressing is used. Since 1864, vinification has been carried out exclusively in oak barrels that have held wine for at least four years. This method encourages micro-oxygenation and imparts complexity and roundness. Each parcel is vinified separately without malolactic fermentation to preserve the original integrity of the fruit and the lively character typical of these wines with significant aging potential.

Blend

Chardonnay, pinot noir, and pinot meunier.

Characteristics and tasting tips for Alfred Gratien Brut Nature

Tasting

Appearance
Bright, the wine displays a beautiful golden yellow color. The bubbles are steady and remarkably fine.

Nose
Intense, the initial nose reveals aromas of dried fruits, candied fruits, and melted butter. With aeration, the bouquet becomes more complex with notes of hazelnut, walnut, and jasmine.

Palate
A lively attack leads to a palate that, thanks to its absence of dosage, charms with its energy, minerality, and assertive texture. The finish is persistent and precise, leaving a lasting impression with its zesty notes.

Food and wine pairings

This Brut Nature cuvée from Alfred Gratien is an ideal match for dishes with a firm texture such as lobster, cured ham, small game birds, aged gouda, or aged mimolette.

Serving

For optimal tasting, serve at 8°C in a slender flute.
