Decanter

Casanova di Neri’s ‘white label’ is crafted from the estate’s vineyards in Montalcino’s northeast. The 2017 edition also sees grapes from Cerretalto included, which is usually bottled separately. It emerges slowly, giving scents of violets, yellow broom and mint. The palate is currently a bit angular but the core reaches deep. It hints promisingly at cherry, clay, iron and graphite. An intriguing, intricate expression with noteworthy freshness. Give this a year to flesh out.

James Suckling

A firm and chewy 2017 that is slightly austere but still provides a lively, dark-fruited palate. Medium to full body. Give this a year or two to soften. Try after 2023.

Jancis Robinson

Walter Speller

Lustrous mid ruby. Brooding, sweet fruit nose with a suggestion of oak but otherwise still a little closed. Concentrated deep sweet-sour cherry palate with fine but firm tannins. Very long and elegant rather than powerful. (WS)

Falstaff

Falstaff

Clear, intense ruby red. Elegant bouquet of preserved cherry and black plum, with notes of cardamom and a touch of iodine. Polished on the palate, with silky tannins, striking freshness, very balanced, with great tension from the start to the long finish.

The Wine Independent

Susan Hulme

This 2017 Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino has a very young-looking, opaque, blue-tinged ruby color. The nose is open and appealing with black cherry fruit, but also some lighter red-fruit notes and what feels like a lighter oak regime that adds less heavy, attractive spice notes. On the palate there is a note of dark, charred oak and a tar note, but this combines attractively with lovely blue-flower and black-purple berried fruit, along with firm tannins. An ambitious, muscular, and powerful style from the hot, dry 2017 vintage, yet with a very appealing new lightness of touch.

Description

The complexity and freshness of a Tuscan wine

The estate

In the shadow of the majestic Tuscan hills lies Casanova di Neri, a renowned winery where tradition blends harmoniously with innovation. The estate was founded in 1971 by Giovanni Neri and is now run by his son Giacomo, who has inherited the same love of wine and terroir as his father. Here, every bottle is a reflection of the year it was produced, and bears witness to a relentless quest for quality and authenticity. At Casanova di Neri, the history and heritage of the Montalcino region are at the heart of every product, as in the remarkable 2017 Brunello di Montalcino.

The vineyard

Brunello di Montalcino 2017 from Casanova di Neri is a Tuscan wine that stems from a vineyard covering around 63 hectares spread over several plots. The diversity of soils and microclimates offers a palette of nuances to the wines produced. The vineyard enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and mild winters. It benefits from a privileged geographical location that favours optimal ripening of the grapes, resulting in wines with a unique personality.

Winemaking and ageing

The bunches are hand-picked before being destemmed and selected using an optical selector. This is followed by spontaneous fermentation without the addition of yeast and maceration assisted by frequent pumping over. All this takes place in truncated cone-shaped steel vats at a controlled temperature for 25 days. The wine is aged for 42 months in casks. This Brunello di Montalcino wine is aged for 6 months in the bottle to produce this exceptional wine.
