The estate

Owned by the Sogrape Group, one of the most important Portuguese wine producers, Casa Ferreirinha is synonymous with one word: outstanding. Founded in the 18th century by Bernardo Ferreira, the house is renowned for its in-depth knowledge of the Douro vineyards and for the quality of its wines. Casa Ferreirinha was the first winery in Portugal to produce non-fortified Douro red wines.

The wine

Castas Escondidas 2018 by Casa Ferreirinha is a Douro wine made from a rigorous selection of old vines, from both the estate and partnering winemakers’ vineyards. The name of this wine, meaning "hidden varieties", reflects the desire to create a singular wine whose blend combines the richness and nuances of traditional varieties with rare grape varieties generally used in the production of port.

The vintage

The winter was cold and dry. The heavy rainfall during spring had an impact on the flowering period and led to sanitary pressure, whcih resulted in low yields. Despite hot and dry summer conditions, water stress was minimal thanks to sufficient water reserves. The grapes harvested showcase a high quality.

Vinification and ageing

Following destemming, the grapes are vinified in stainless steel tanks. Long maceration. Aged in French oak barrels for 18 months. No filtration before bottling.

The tasting

Colour

This wine is a beautiful ruby colour.

Nose

Intense, the nose blends fragrances of truffles, undergrowth and resin with spicy (pepper, cinnamon), balsamic and fruity (fresh red fruit) notes.

Palate

Ample and smooth, the palate reveals fine tannins as well as delicious fruity and spicy aromas. The finish is persistent and offers a seductive balance.

Storage

Enjoy now, this Douro red wine can be cellared until around 2023.

Service

For an optimal tasting experience, it is recommended to decant the wine before serving it at a temperature between 16 and 18°C.
