Description
A fine and precise Argentinian red wine
The estate
In 1902, the pioneering Nicola Catena founded the Bodega Catena Zapata and planted his first plot of Malbec vines in the exceptional vineyards of Mendoza in Argentina.
This family-owned estate, constantly seeking excellence, experienced a new boom when it was taken over in the 1960s by Nicolás Catena Zapata. Wishing to revolutionise the production methods of Argentinian wines, Nicolás Catena Zapata was inspired by the vinification of Napa Valley wines and revealed new high-altitude terroirs in order to enhance the expression of the grape varieties.
Nicknamed "The Grand Cru of South America," Bodega Catena Zapata is an international major name recognised by critics for the finesse and elegance of its Argentinian wines.
The vineyard
Argentino Malbec 2020 is a Mendoza wine that stems from old vines from the Nicasia and Angelica vineyards, planted from a massal pre-phylloxera selection from the Angelica Vineyard. The grapes are grown at altitudes varying between 900 and 1100 metres on diverse soils made up of light gravel, silt and clay.
The wine
Argentino Malbec 2020 is a Mendoza wine produced as a tribute to the Malbec grape, its French history and its emergence in South America following the devastation caused in Europe by phylloxera. Phylloxera is represented here as a personification of death, the death of Malbec in the Old World before its rebirth in the New, where it now produces wines that can be considered among the greatest in the world.
Winemaking and ageing
Argentino Malbec 2020 is produced from whole bunch fermentations (20%) in 100% new French oak barrels for a period of 28 days, thus allowing a good integration of the wood. Fermentations were carried out at low temperature using indigenous yeasts. The wine then remained in barrels on its lees for 18 months.
