The elegance of a great limestone terroir in Chianti Classico
The estate
Although the thousand-year-old abbey of San Michele Arcangelo a Passignano has a very ancient winegrowing history, the modern Antinori - Badia a Passignano estate was truly established in 1987 when it was acquired by the Antinori family. Located in Tuscany, this emblematic property today belongs to the Marchesi Antinori Srl company, led by Albiera Antinori, representing the 26th generation. The brand is distinguished by its exceptional expertise, combining tradition and modernity, to produce wines of international renown in the heart of a remarkable historic site.
The vineyard
The vines used for this cuvée flourish at the heart of the Chianti Classico appellation, on the estate's historic lands. Set at an altitude of around 300 metres, the vineyard benefits from soils mainly composed of limestone, combined with a fine proportion of clay. This privileged environment allows for deep root growth and offers ideal conditions for vine cultivation.
The vintage
The 2022 growing season was marked by low rainfall until August. Spring and summer proved particularly hot, with temperatures above seasonal averages in June and July. Despite this heat, the vines maintained a healthy development. In mid-August, the arrival of rain and the drop in temperatures helped to optimise ripening conditions. Harvest took place from the last week of September to the first week of October.
Winemaking and ageing
After rigorous selection, the grapes are destemmed and gently crushed. Alcoholic fermentation lasts ten days, followed by skin maceration of an equivalent duration. Following malolactic fermentation, this 2022 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is aged for several months in the abbey's historic cellars dating from the 10th century. Ageing takes place mainly in French oak barrels, with a small proportion in Hungarian oak. The wine is then bottled at the estate, where it continues its ageing prior to release.
Grape variety
This cuvée is made exclusively from Sangiovese.
