Description
An exceptional collection of the nine emblematic crus of Barbaresco
The estate
Founded in 1958 by Don Fiorino Marengo, the cooperative winery Produttori del Barbaresco carries on the legacy of Domizio Cavazza, who created the region’s first cooperative in 1894. Now led by Aldo Vacca, it brings together 54 winegrowing families across 120 hectares in Piedmont. This iconic institution stands out for its singular commitment: every member delivers 100% of their Nebbiolo production to the cooperative, ensuring outstanding quality. Internationally recognized, Produttori del Barbaresco embodies cooperative excellence and produces wines with remarkable terroir expression at accessible prices.
The vineyard
The nine crus in this collection come from plots located within the Barbaresco DOCG appellation, spread across the communes of Barbaresco, Neive, Treiso and San Rocco Seno d'Elvio. Each cru - Asili, Rabajà, Pora, Montestefano, Ovello, Pajè, Montefico, Muncagota and Rio Sordo - expresses a unique terroir. The vines thrive on calcareous marl soils at elevations ranging from 150 to 400 meters, benefiting from distinct exposures and microclimates. The nearby Tanaro River influences the climate by bringing coolness and humidity, preserving Nebbiolo’s natural acidity. Yields are deliberately kept low, and green harvesting is carried out to ensure the highest quality.
The vintage
The 2021 vintage is considered exceptional in Piedmont. The mild, rainy winter built up excellent water reserves. The cool spring, with chilly nights in April and May, did not affect Nebbiolo, allowing for normal flowering. Summer remained warm without excess, with a hot spell from mid-August to early September reaching 35°C, tempered by significant day-to-night temperature swings. The first half of September stayed warm, while the second brought cool nights, ideal for ripening. Harvest took place from October 6 to 18, with grapes in perfect health and optimal maturity. The berries, smaller than the previous year, concentrated the polyphenols, promising wines of great structure and longevity.
Winemaking and aging
Each cru in the Barbaresco Crus Collection 2021 is vinified separately using an identical method, allowing each terroir to fully express its personality. The wines undergo extended aging in large Slavonian oak casks, respecting tradition and preserving the purity of the fruit. In accordance with the requirements of the Barbaresco Riserva appellation, the wines were aged for a total of 50 months, including around 24 months in oak, before bottling.
