Jancis Robinson

James Lawther MW

100% Merlot. 47 hl/ha. Cask sample. Lifted and zesty with lively, crunchy fruit and red-berry fragrance. Chalky freshness as well. Adequate fruit to manage the tannins. Refreshing saline finish. Drinks relatively early. (JL)

All Merlot raised in used barrels and tank, the translucent ruby-hued 2021 Château Troplong Mondot Mondot has a Pinot Noir-like perfume of red berries, peppery herbs, chalky minerality, and hints of white truffle. It's incredibly elegant, has silky, fine tannins, and a gorgeous finish.

(100% Merlot) Floral, silky, fresh, fragrant bouquet, red berries, cherries, chalk. Fine, delicate palate with light, precise fresh fruit, slender structure, subtle finish. Can improve further. 16/20 2026 - 2037

Jane Anson

Jane Anson

A 100% limestone wine, from a vintage that emphasizes the limestone to the point of austerity at times, yet this one glides lightly across the palate, with chalky tannins, cool but creamy blueberry purée, and rose-petal aromatics as it opens. It reflects the character of the plot. 40% aged in tank, the rest in neutral one-year-old barrels. Can be enjoyed now and over the next five to ten years. This is the last year of 100% Merlot in this wine, before the addition of Cabernet Franc in 2022. Harvest from September 17 to October 19, yield of 47 hl/ha.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

The 2021 Mondot is 100% Merlot, grown on limestone with no new oak. It has a medium to deep garnet-purple color and it springs from the glass with expressive notes of raspberry preserves, kirsch, and fresh blackberries, plus hints of rose oil and cinnamon stick. Medium-bodied, the palate is vibrant and refreshing with fine-knit layers of bright, red berry flavors and a soft texture, finishing with a provocative lift.

Le Figaro Vin

A very fresh, vibrant nose of red fruits, with notes of rose and flint. The palate is dominated by lovely crunchy, exuberant red fruits, perfectly ripe and very juicy. A friendly, approachable wine with beautiful refinement on the finish.

Characteristics and tasting advice for Mondot 2021

Tasting

This Saint-Émilion wine harmoniously combines vivacity and a precise tannic structure with refreshing floral notes.

A fresh and floral Saint-Émilion wine

The property

On the right bank of Bordeaux where most properties hardly exceed 10 hectares, the Château Troplong Mondot is one of the largest estates in Saint-Émilion. Founded in 1700, this Premier Grand Cru Classé is at the top of the Saint-Émilion appellation.

The vineyard

A reference among the great Saint-Émilion wines, Château Troplong Mondot oversees a single 43-hectare vineyard, peaking at 110 meters in altitude. The vineyard is entirely managed using reasoned viticulture. The vines, averaging 30 years old, are grown on typical clay-limestone soils of the appellation.
