Description
A structured and delicious Piedmont wine by Michele Chiarlo
The estate
The eponymous Michele Chiarlo estate has been writing its reputation since 1956, when this oenologist decided to create his own estate and produce fine Piedmont wines.
His goal? To make the very most of the terroirs and grape varieties of Piedmont and to reveal their unique personality through constantly seeking excellence and carrying out a tailor-made vinification process.
Located in the village of Calamandrana, in the heart of the Barolo appellation, Michele Chiarlo's estate produces wines known for their inimitable style, that harmoniously combine aromatic complexity with supple and silky tannins.
The vineyard
A benchmark among fine Piedmont wines, the Michele Chiarlo estate watches over a patchwork of vineyards that spread over 110 hectares and thus make up a true treasure trove in the Langhe region in northern Italy.
The wine
Produced since 1996, Michele Chiarlo's Cipressi is made from a 10-hectare vineyard with a south-east to south-west exposure in the village of Castelnuovo Calcea. The vines are 20 years old on average and are planted on clay-limestone soils composed of marl, marine sediments, silt and sand. These soils are rich in microelements, especially magnesium.
The vintage
The late winter preceded a spring marked by abundant snow followed by rainy spells that restored water reserves, following a very dry 2017. These conditions prompted the team to intervene rapidly at the beginning of June in order to maintain the health of the vineyard. Hot and dry, the summer enabled the vineyard to develop to the point where it was necessary to remove 35 to 40% of the excess bunches in order to ensure a lower yield but a high quality. The alternation between warm days and cool nights at the end of the summer and the beginning of the autumn enabled the grapes to ripen fully and evenly. The harvest was carried out between September 20th and 25th.
Vinification and ageing
The hand-picked grapes are vinified in vats. The skin maceration for 10 to 12 days is carried out with wetting of the cork. Following malolactic fermentation in vats, this wine is aged for 12 months in oak barrels and then aged in the bottle before being sold.
