James Suckling

This is very fresh and racy with red and blue berries, crushed violets, lavender and walnuts. Medium-bodied, structured and meaty with solid tannins that are ripe and velvety, yet still give a firm backbone to the wine. The fruit is vivid and pronounced with lots of floral and spicy notes. Try after 2026.

Barbaresco. Maturing mid ruby with bright orange tinges. Pretty, soft oak and strawberry-fruit nose. Light and pleasant but not up to cru level and fading a little on the finish. (WS)

Vinous

Antonio Galloni

The 2020 Barbaresco Asili is soft, sensual and immediately charming. Crushed rose petal, mint, red cherry, kirsch, leather and cedar give the 2020 plenty of aromatic lift to match its mid-weight personality. I would prefer to drink this over the next few years.

J.P.

The beauty of the Chiarlo Barbarescos is how they coax such beautiful aromas out of their wines, and this wine is no exception with captivating aromas of Marasca cherries, macerated raspberries, wild rose and bay leaf. Pristine flavors of wild red-berry preserves, sweet tea and cedar finishing with elegant tannins and crisp acidity. Drink now–2040.

Description

The typicity and balance of a great wine from Piedmont

The estate

The fame of the eponymous estate Michele Chiarlo has been written since 1956, when this oenologist decided to create his own estate and produce great wines from Piedmont. His ambition? To enhance the terroirs and grape varieties of Piedmont and reveal their own personality through a constant quest for excellence and a tailor-made vinification. Located in the village of Calamandrana, within the Barolo appellation, the Michele Chiarlo estate produces wines recognized for their inimitable style, harmoniously combining aromatic complexity with supple and silky tannins.

The vineyard

The Michele Chiarlo estate oversees a mosaic of vineyards spread over 110 hectares, constituting a real treasure of the Langhe, in the north of Italy.

The wine

Produced since 1996, the Barbaresco Asili from Michele Chiarlo is made from a vineyard of about 1 hectare, facing southwest. Averaging 30 years old, the vines are planted on soils composed of limestone marls with a low presence of clay. Poor in organic matter, this terroir is rich in magnesium and calcium.

Vinification and aging

The manually harvested grapes undergo vinification in 55hl oak vats with cork wetting. Following malolactic fermentation, this wine benefits from a minimum of 2 years of aging, including 18 months in medium-sized barrels, as well as additional bottle aging before its commercialization.

Grape variety

Asili 2020 from Michele Chiarlo is a 100% nebbiolo.
