Robert Parker

William Kelley

Tasted from bottle, the 2017 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot) opens in the glass with an attractive bouquet of berry fruit, plums, orange rind and coniferous forest floor, framed by a deft application of new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and enveloping, its succulent core of fruit framed by melting tannins. From barrel, I faulted this wine for being excessively open-knit, but while it certainly is unusually supple and giving by the standards of this cuvée, there's more depth than I perceived last year: what's more, and critically, this is simply immensely pleasurable to drink.

Vinous

Neal Martin

The 2017 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru has a rich, opulent bouquet of baked red cherries, cranberry and just a faint touch of coconut. A little oaky, but seductive in a New World style. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, and flashy for a Clos Vougeot. A Pinot Noir that wants to be noticed, but it lacks intellectual heft. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

Description

The refinement and structure of a Burgundy red wine

The estate

Since 1859, Maison Louis Jadot has been an emblem in Burgundy. Its history began in 1826 with the acquisition of the Beaune Premier Cru "Clos des Ursules." Owner of prestigious parcels, Louis Jadot perpetuates a know-how passed down from generation to generation, offering enthusiasts the excellence of Burgundy wines.

At the helm of the house since 1992, Pierre-Henry Gagey handed over the presidency to Thomas Seiter (formerly of Bouchard Père et Fils) in September 2022, entrusting the general management to his son Thibault Gagey.

The vineyard

This Clos Vougeot Grand Cru from Maison Louis Jadot comes from an iconic terroir of the Côte de Nuits, extending over 50 hectares. The second largest owner of the Clos (which has 88 holders), Louis Jadot cultivates nearly 0.5 hectares facing east, on clay-limestone soils renowned for their quality.

Vinification and aging

The harvest is done by hand, followed by meticulous sorting before destemming. Maceration takes place in open vats (wood and stainless steel) for 3 to 4 weeks, with two punch-downs per day. Aging lasts 18 months in oak barrels, one third of which are new barrels from the estate's cooperage.

Grape variety

This Clos Vougeot Grand Cru Domaine Louis Jadot 2017 is 100% Pinot Noir.
