Description
The elegance and aromatic finesse of a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru
The estate
The Château Angélus is one of the prestigious Premier Grand Cru Classé A of Saint-Émilion. This legendary estate in the appellation was founded in 1782 and, for eight generations, the de Boüard de Laforest family has guarded this exceptional heritage. Carillon d’Angélus is the second wine of Château Angélus.
The vineyard
Carillon d’Angélus 2020 comes from an 18-hectare vineyard with plots spread across clay, clay-limestone-sandy soils and well-draining soils. Attuned to its environment, this estate in Saint-Émilion is undergoing conversion to organic farming and the vineyard is certified High Environmental Value level 3.
The vintage
The heavy rainfall during winter and spring allowed the soils to build up a life-saving water reserve throughout the year to preserve the balance of the vineyard. The 2020 vintage is marked both by prolonged drought and by the ability of the soils (clays, limestones) to provide perfect balance by drawing on water reserves. Summer conditions were ideal for ensuring good ripeness and producing healthy, balanced grapes rich in polyphenols. Balanced and complete, 2020 is a perfect synthesis of its two illustrious predecessors, 2018 and 2019.
Winemaking and aging
Winemaking takes place in inverted conical stainless steel tanks, with filling and extraction work by gravity. A pre-fermentation maceration precedes alcoholic fermentation, followed by a post-fermentation maceration of 1 to 3 weeks. Barrel filling is carried out 50% after draining and 50% after malolactic fermentation. Aging lasts 16 months in barrels, of which 60% are new and 40% in one-wine barrels.
Blend
Merlot (90%), Cabernet Franc (10%)
