Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of the Arborina 2022 by Elio Altare
Tasting
Colour
The wine displays a deep ruby colour with garnet highlights, the mark of measured extraction and extended ageing.
Nose
The nose reveals a pronounced floral dimension, with notes of rose petals alongside fresh red fruit. A light, delicate ethereal touch completes this aromatic palette, a signature of Nebbiolo grown on the terroirs of La Morra.
Palate
The palate is warm and elegant, driven by fine yet tight-knit tannins that are supple while retaining considerable intensity. The whole reflects great aromatic elegance and a silky tannic structure, characteristic of the estate's style.
An Italian Barolo of great floral finesse, the signature of the Elio Altare estate
The estate
Founded in 1948 in La Morra, in the Piedmontese Langhe, the Elio Altare estate owes its reputation to the modernist break initiated by Elio Altare in the late 1970s, when he introduced short macerations and French barriques into a world then dominated by tradition. Now run by Silvia Altare, Elio's daughter, the estate farms around 10 to 12 hectares organically across La Morra, Serralunga d'Alba and Castiglione Falletto, upholding a winemaking philosophy that is simple, natural and respectful of the terroir.
The vineyard
This Barolo wine comes from the Arborina plot, a south/south-east-facing amphitheatre in La Morra, directly opposite the estate. The Nebbiolo vines, some planted as early as 1948 and others in 1989, are rooted in the sandy clay marl soils typical of the commune's Tortonian terroir, which favour floral aromatic expression and a particularly silky tannic texture.
Vinification and ageing
For the Arborina 2022, vinification follows the estate's long-standing principles: four to five days of skin maceration in rotary fermenters, encouraging rapid and even extraction of colour and aromas, using indigenous yeasts only. Malolactic fermentation takes place spontaneously, followed by around twenty-four months of ageing in French oak barriques, some of them new. The wine is neither fined nor filtered, in keeping with the estate's cherished philosophy of naturalness.
