Wine Spectator

Kristen Bieler

Broad and stylish, with a smoldering core of bitter cherry draped in sweet tobacco, cigar box and sweet cedar. Smoldering and dense, with mocha and vanilla details adding warmth and richness to round off the long finish. Drink now through 2028. 100 cases imported.

Vinous

Nicolas Greinacher

The 2021 Saint-Joseph Vignes de l'Hospice is much leaner and more laid-back compared to the surrounding two vintages. Ripe red fruits, cedar, blackberry subtleties and delicate sour cherry are some of the signatures. Allow this medium-bodied 2021 two more years in bottle, and enjoy it while waiting for the 2020 and 2022 to come around.

Description

The balance and richness of a Saint-Joseph red wine

The property

The E. Guigal Estate was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal, in Ampuis. His son, Marcel, took over in 1961. Today, the 3rd generation continues the legacy and values of this iconic family house of the Rhône Valley.

Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Hermitage, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, the E. Guigal estate oversees a mosaic of vineyards located in numerous appellations that form a range of wines of impeccable quality.

Over the vintages, the E. Guigal house has experienced strong growth, notably becoming the owner in 1995 of the famous Château d’Ampuis, as well as several wine estates in the Rhône Valley (Jean-Louis Grippat, Domaine de Vallouit, Domaine de Bonserine or even the Château de Nalys, in Châteauneuf-du-Pape).

The vineyard

A major reference among the wines of the Rhône Valley, Vignes de l'Hospice by E. Guigal is a cuvée from emblematic vineyards aged between 20 and 80 years, planted on a granitic slope.

Vinification and aging

Control of alcoholic fermentations and temperatures up to 33°C. This Saint-Joseph wine benefits from aging in new oak barrels for 30 months.

Blend

This Lieu-dit Saint-Joseph - Vignes de l’Hospice 2021 by E. Guigal is a 100% syrah.
