The estate
Nestled on the foothills of the Wairau Valley in Marlborough, Clos Henri is a leading New Zealand estate managed by a Sancerre icon: the Bourgeois family, winegrowers for 10 generations. Eager to reveal the finest terroirs for Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc, Rémi and Jean‑Marie Bourgeois set out to explore the world in search of a hidden gem. After a long quest, the family chose to settle in New Zealand, founding Clos Henri in 2000. Today, the estate encompasses 110 hectares of vineyards, with 42 hectares certified organic.
The vineyard
Blessed with glacial soils, the estate boasts one of the most diverse terroirs in the Marlborough valley. Shaped by three distinct geological periods, the soils comprise layers of wind‑blown clays and river‑rolled stones.
Clos Henri Otira Sauvignon Blanc comes from the “ Otira ” parcel, characterized by a terroir of pebbles and glacial stones. The vines are approximately 13 to 18 years old.
Vinification and aging
Following a gentle pressing, 85% of the must is placed in stainless steel tanks to begin fermentation, while the remaining 15% ferments spontaneously in old French oak barrels and Austrian 600‑liter demi‑muids. The wine is then aged on fine lees for eight months and subsequently returned to stainless steel tanks and barrels for a further six months.
