Château Peby Faugères 2017

An exceptional wine from Saint-Émilion

With this new vintage, the Château Peby Faugères 2017 confirms its place as one of the greatest on the Bordeaux wine market.

Becoming a fully-fledged Cru recognised in the 2012 Saint-Emilion ranking, Château Peby Faugères extends over a 7.45-hectare vineyard located on a single slope of clay-limestone. Devoting endless effort through an uncompromising quest for quality, Silvio Denz and his team, advised by Michel Rolland, have managed to reveal the purest expression of this unique terroir through wines of great elegance and class. This new 2017 vintage marks a major change in the management of the estate, since Château Peby Faugères is the midst of converting to organic.

Blessed with a great terroir in Saint-Émilion, Château Faugères was spared during the nights of frost in April 2017, and the extreme care taken in the vineyard has allowed the fruit to reach optimal maturity. A monovarietal cuvée resulting from the very selective assembly of the Peby Grand Vin, the Château Peby Faugères 2017 is a 100% Merlot, harvest only from the parcels of old Merlot vines in the "Butte", a south-facing plot. Already very expressive and displaying a beautifully fruity profile, Château Peby Faugères 2017 reveals the full extent of the estate’s personality. With its dense texture, chewy tannins, and great persistence on the finish, this is a Saint-Emilion Merlot with a bright future ahead of it.

Wine Advocate-Parker :
Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Peby Faugeres leaps from the glass with vibrant scents of kirsch, Black Forest cake, blueberry preserves and red roses plus nuances of charcuterie and Ceylon tea. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is chock-full of crunchy black and blue fruit flavors, framed by plush tannins and oodles of freshness, finishing long and perfumed. Not the usual, hedonic Peby Faugeres--I do love this more elegant, refreshing style! It is composed of 100% Merlot and was aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, 65% new. 10,000 bottles were made, representing 70% grand vin. Best of all, the alcohol rocks up at 14.5%--over that pesky 14% USA trade tariff threshold!
