Classified Growth produced in Pessac-Leognan, Chateau Olivier red is produced on a 52 hectare vineyard. The average age of the vines is 20 years old, and they are planted on günzian gravel and a clay-limestone subsoil. The wine is aged barrels (1/3 in new barrels) for a period of 12 months. The 2016 vintage is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlotand 5% Petit Verdot.
After a mild and humid winter and a spring with a lot of rain, flowering began in late May and early June. Starting on July 1st and ending on September 13th the weather was dry and warm. Two periods of heavy rain in September provided the water that the vines desperately needed. The high temperatures in October allowed the plants to reach optimal maturation. The grapes were harvested from September 28th to October 20th.
Chateau Olivier red 2016 takes advantage of the fruity richness provided by Merlot. Notes of red fruits, black cherries and coffee present themselves. This varietal brings full flavours to the mouth with dense and elegantlyfinetannins. Merlot is also the provider of the amazing length of this 2016 vintage. Petit Verdot brings fragrances of spices and well-structured tannins for the finish.
Wine Advocate-Parker : They 2016 Chateau Olivier has a well-defined bouquet with blackberry, black olive and a touch of undergrowth, quite nuanced at first but unfurling with confidence within a couple minutes of aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, a pleasant salinity and fine structure, a touch of edginess here and a dash of spice towards that finish, which maybe just cuts away a little sooner than expected. That said, up until then, everything bodes well for a strong follow up to the 2015 Chateau Olivier.
