Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

A ripe style, with overt anise and fruitcake notes out front, followed quickly by flavors of blueberry and blackberry preserves. A little shy on stuffing, but the fruit is tasty. Shows a little more depth than when tasted from barrel. Drink now through 2022. 10,000 cases made.

Decanter

Pleasing aromas of autumnal strawberry and pomegranate, creosote and even some rhubarb introduce a somewhat light-bodied wine whose brisk attack denotes the high acidity of the vintage. Its 'high-toned' nature should work well with grilled steak, mushroom-filled ravioli or a pizza quattro formaggi. While I like the opening brightness, the palate gives way to drying, oak-derived tannins that perturb balance, contributing to a somewhat astringent (and shortish) finish. Drink up.

Plenty of currants, blackberries and wet earth here. Iodine, too. Medium to full body, firm and chewy tannins and a savory, subtle, fruity finish. Lovely texture. Drink in 2020.

Vinous

Antonio Galloni

The 2014 de Ferrand is bold, powerful and juicy. There is not much subtlety here. Even so, the 2014 packs a real punch and offers plenty of intensity in a bold, rustic style. Black cherry, plum, bittersweet chocolate, cloves, menthol and a generous slathering of oak build into the opulent finish. This is in a powerful, extracted style, but there is enough balance to make the wine well worth seeking out. It would be interesting to see what the wine might taste like with less oak and a gentler approach to vinification. Tasted two times.

La RVF

A full-bodied, warm, complete wine whose grainy tannins from clay-rich terroir press firmly on the finish.

Le Figaro Vin

A smooth, charming wine; lovely Merlot, with a slight bitterness. 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Yves Beck

Garnet red. Very fine, alluring, and complex nose. Notes of coconut, chocolate, and vanilla. The attack is elegant and fruity. The body is balanced, with mature tannins that reveal themselves slowly. Good aromatic intensity on the palate with notes of dark fruit. The finish needs to soften but confirms the wine’s promising character.

Jean-Marc Quarin

Jean-Marc Quarin

Very deeply colored wine, with a fruity, discreet nose and a pleasant palate, featuring a rather airy body even though the finish is slightly marked by oak. Normal length.

Description

A powerful and elegant Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

The estate

Located a few kilometres from Saint-Émilion, on the right bank of Bordeaux, Château de Ferrand, founded in 1702 by Elie de Bétoulaud, was acquired in December 1977 by Baron Bich. Since 1994, his daughter Pauline and her husband Philippe Chandon-Moët have taken over the running of the estate. Carrying out numerous improvements and innovations, their work was rewarded in the classification of Château de Ferrand, ranking as a Grand Cru Classé in 2012. Gonzague de Lambert has been the director of Château de Ferrand since 2017.

Made with great precision, the wines of Château de Ferrand are renowned for their structure, their aromas of ripe red fruit mixed with a delicate freshness and fine tannins.

The vineyard

Château de Ferrand’s vineyard spreads across 42 hectares of vines, of which a 32-hectare single-block vineyard is used in the production of the estate’s wines. The vines are planted at the end of the Saint Emilion limestone plateau, on a ledge that overlooks the curving Dordogne valley. This location leads to an excellent drainage of the soil thanks to runoff, which, combined with the ideal altitude and sun exposure, gives rise to fine Saint-Emilion wines.

Obtaining the Terra Vitis certification in 2012 and HEV level 3 in 2018, Château de Ferrand manages its vineyard using environmentally friendly practices, both in the vineyard (mechanical soil tillage, inter-row grassing, manual harvesting) and in the 10 hectares of forest or meadows that surround the vineyard.

The vintage

Spring was marked by a combination of high temperatures during the day and cool nights, ideal conditions for the development of the vines. The rainy days at the end of June, followed by thunderstorms were succeeded by cold, rainy weather with little sunshine until September, when, finally, the favourable conditions optimised the ripening of the grapes.

The vinification and ageing

The hand-picked grapes are rigorously sorted before being vatted, using a gravity flow method, in a completely renovated cellar. Vinification and ageing are carried out in a plot-by-pot manner in order to enhance the expression of each terroir’s distinctive features.

The blend

Merlot (82%)

Cabernet Sauvignon (5%)

Cabernet Franc (13%).
