Decanter

Smooth and supple, this is generous in terms of fruit flavours – blackcurrant and strawberry giving red and black fruits with a zingy, energetic kick to the palate from the acidity and a slightly high-definition feel to the tannins that stop just short of being too sharp. This is definitely more focused than plush and opulent at this point. Focused and linear, with appealing cooling blue-fruit aspects on the finish too. Still a touch restrained, so give it time.

James Suckling

A linear and rather tight red with some berry, crushed-stone and bark character. Medium body, firm tannins and a slightly austere finish. 60% merlot and 40% cabernet sauvignon. Give it two or three years to soften.

Vinous

The 2020 Château de Chantegrive has a nicely composed bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit, sage and cedar. A floral element becomes more prominent with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip on the entry, rather powdery in texture, yet balanced with a subtle note of dark chocolate furnishing the finish. Not complex, but a delightful Pessac-Léognan with decent substance.

Smoky cherries are at the core of this wine. One of the top wines from the Southern Graves, the wine is already open and accessible, allowing you to enjoy all its earthy, red, chocolate- and espresso-tinged sweet fruits. Forward, medium-bodied and ready to go. You can enjoy this with pleasure on release. Drink from 2023–2035.

Dark ruby garnet, purple reflections, deep core, delicate rim brightening. Nuances of ripe plums and nougat, hints of vanilla, dark cherries. Medium complexity, fine fruit sweetness, dark wild berries, delicate tannins, good freshness, mineral finish, a balanced companion at the table.

Rather Merlot-derived aromas, sweet plum, red berries, sage and mocha. Round, voluminous and generous palate, very discreet wood, ample red-fruit flavours combining sweet fruit with a fresh backbone, ripe but youthful tannin and a long, warm finish.

Lots of ripe black cherries, currants, leafy herbs, and damp earth notes emerge from the 2020 Château De Chantegrive, a medium-bodied, nicely textured, enjoyable Graves that has plenty of fruit and texture.

Always a leading voice in the appellation. This is good quality, has depth, cocoa bean, sandalwood and incense, bitter dark chocolate, one of the real successes of the vintage, supple tannins, a trace of heat but it works. Tasted twice, impressed both times. Ambassadeur de Grave.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2020 de Chantegrive Rouge has a nose of baked red and black plums and mulberries with wafts of wood smoke, bay leaves, and damp soil. The full-bodied palate is packed with juicy, uncomplicated black fruits, supported by soft tannins, finishing savory.

Le Figaro Vin

A very pretty fruit profile, slightly evolved or even reductive, with notes of fresh mushroom. The palate is intense, with lingering woody tannins and a lovely texture oscillating between power and elegance, while the finish brings a refreshing tangy touch.

Currently, 36 hectares are in production at Chantegrive on gravelly soils with rolled pebbles and fine sands over clay-limestone subsoils. Ageing lasts 12 months and is carried out in barrels, 50% of which are new. The 2020 stands out for its fruity intensity and chalky nuances. Juicy, the wine is supported by precise, velvety tannins. A sapid, harmonious Chantegrive, ready for the future!

Terre de Vins

After a nuanced nose of blackcurrant, prune, and a hint of chocolate, you’ll be charmed by the round, velvety tannins, the tender cherry-flesh texture, and aromas of dark fruits such as blackberry and blackcurrant, with a discreet mocha note. Plenty of freshness right through to a peppery, refreshing finish.

90–92. Barrel Sample. Rich and densely fruity, this wine has ripe fruits that shine over the layer of tannins. Black currant fruits and general opulence are already suggesting a wine that will age over the medium-term.

Description

The freshness and aromatic richness of a red wine from Graves

The estate

Founded in 1966, Château de Chantegrive is part of the Union of Grands Crus of Bordeaux. This forward-thinking family property in Graves is managed with passion and precision, producing beautiful wines representative of the Bordeaux region.

The vineyard

The 160 plots of the Chantegrive vineyard extend over 36 hectares in the heart of the Graves. The vines, around twenty years old on average, are planted in a soil of gravel, round pebbles and fine sand on clay-limestone soil. The vineyard is managed with great precision, according to the principles of sustainable viticulture.

The vintage

The climatic conditions of this 2020 vintage favoured the rapid development of the vines and the optimal maturation of the grapes. The early harvest yielded perfectly ripe Merlot and concentrated Cabernet.

Vinification and ageing

Cold pre-fermentation maceration for 7 to 10 days. Alcoholic fermentation in temperature-controlled vats. 7 days of post-fermentation maceration. Ageing in barrels (50% new oak) for 12 months.

The blend

The Château de Chantegrive 2020 was made from a blend of Merlot (70%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (30%).

The tasting

The Château de Chantegrive 2020 reflects the characteristics of a sunny vintage, through its richness, smoothness and aromatic palette. A nice balance between tension and freshness guarantees great ageing potential. Deep red in colour, this 2020 vintage seduces with its balance, delicate tannins and aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry cream and spices.
