Description

The aromatic expression and elegance of a Pessac-Léognan red wine

The estate

The Château Carbonnieux was founded in the 13th century by the Benedictines of the Abbey of Sainte-Croix. Château Carbonnieux is located within the Pessac-Léognan appellation and is among the oldest châteaux in Bordeaux. In 1956, Marc Perrin acquired the château, which became a classified growth in 1959 in red and white.

The vineyard

Château Carbonnieux 2022 is a Pessac-Léognan wine from a vineyard spread over a mosaic of terroirs ranging from clay-limestone soils to günzian gravels. 55 hectares are dedicated to red grape varieties. The vines are on average 26 years old. The entire vineyard is certified High Environmental Value level 3. In 2021, 25% of the vineyard is managed organically.

The vintage

A year that started with classic conditions gave way to a spring whose warmth favoured a favourable development of the vineyard and a beautiful flowering. The alternation of humid days with mild nights at the beginning of summer led to significant sanitary pressure, controlled by the rigour of the teams. If the beginning of August was marked by average rainfall and moderate temperatures, from mid-August to early September, heatwave temperatures were recorded, favouring optimal ripening of the berries.

Vinification and ageing

The berries are hand-picked, sorted in the vineyard and then before and after destemming. Fermentation, which lasts an average of 20 days, is carried out in thermo-regulated stainless steel vats. Ageing from 15 to 18 months in Bordeaux barrels, 40% of which are new.

Blend

This Château Carbonnieux red 2023 is the result of a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (55%), Merlot (33%), Cabernet Franc (7%) and Petit Verdot (5%).
