The striking perfume, with its blast of flowers, dark cherries, plums, black raspberries, espresso, and sea salt, demands your attention. The palate seeks recognition for its non-stop waves of ripe, sweet, sensuously textured, dark, red pit fruits. The elegant finish, with its accents of spice, licorice, black cherry liqueur, mint, and oyster shells, crosses the 50-second mark with ease. The wine blends 69% Merlot with 31% Cabernet Franc. Drink from 2028-2060.

A curl of woodsmoke and cedar aromatics, peony and crushed roses, fleshy black fruits, rose petals; I love the switch between opulent silk texture and pumice-stone tannic grip—this is exceptionally good. Josephine Duffau Lagrosse’s first vintage from beginning to end. A low 3.4 pH, reflecting the limestone soils; bottling two months later than usual because of new cellar construction, so 18 months in barrel, 70% new oak, the rest in one-year-old oak. Consultants Axel Marchal and Julien Viaud. A potential 100 points during En Primeur, living up to the billing.

Le Figaro Vin

A noble, refined nose, quivering with impatience like a thoroughbred trembling before the race. A complex, alluring animal touch enhances the crushed raspberry notes. On the palate, the effect is striking: an airy texture that seems weightless, carried by the silkiest of tannins. Then the depth of earthy tones and dark fruit takes hold, like a spellbinding stroll through the cellars of Saint-Émilion, or a journey back in time. The very embodiment of a mineral wine.

Black and purple color. Intense, delicate, fruity, pure, ripe, subtle, fresh, floral nose. Broad on the attack, with an ultra-refined mouthfeel; the wine melts on the palate, juicy and fresh. From mid-palate onward, a powerful, almost spirited aromatic concentration emerges, where a thousand shimmering flavors intertwine. A pulpy wine that goes down like milk. This sculpted expression is owed to the presence of 31% Cabernet Franc, the highest ever seen in this cru (+69% Merlot), and to the total commitment of Joséphine Duffau Lagarrosse, returning in her grandfather’s footsteps. Alcohol: 14.5% – pH: 3.5. Yield: 42 hl/ha.

Description

The balance and character of a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé

The estate

Château Beauséjour has been recognised since the very beginning of the Saint-Émilion classification. A family property since 1847, this Premier Grand Cru Classé of the famous appellation on Bordeaux's right bank was acquired in April 2021 by the Courtin-Clarins family in association with Joséphine Duffau-Lagarosse.

The vineyard

Château Beauséjour is a Saint-Émilion wine that stem from 6.80 hectares of land, with 6.24 hectares in production. The old vines, which are on average 45 years old, are planted on a mosaic of terroirs consisting of clay-limestone soils over asteriated limestone. Rooted on the hillside of the medieval town, the vineyards are cultivated using traditional methods, usually by hand.

The vintage

The summer season was marked by drought and heat waves from June onwards. Harvesting began on 6 September. The Merlot was harvested between 6 and 9 September. The Cabernet Franc was harvested on 23 September. The 2022 vintage is the first to be entirely designed by the new team at Château Beauséjour.

Winemaking and ageing

Harvests were done by hand. Ageing for 14 months in barrels (68% new barrels).

Blend
Château Beauséjour 2022 is a blend of Merlot (69%) and Cabernet Franc (31%).
