Offers aromas of blackberry, coffee and tar, with a full body, silky tannins and a blackberry, mineral and light vanilla aftertaste. Balanced, refined and pretty. Best after 2014. 5,830 cases made.

Very dark – black core and deep purple rim. Sweet, smoky and very ripe black fruit. Tannins dry, firm and fresh and already silky – very attractive. (JH)

The 2005 Beau-Séjour Bécot was picked between 27 September and 5 October. This has a gorgeous bouquet, probably the best that the Bécot family had made up to that point. It overflows with redcurrant, cranberry and red plum, hints of rose petal and ripe Satsuma, with the minerality tucked just underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with fine yet succulent tannins. There is a fresh line of acidity woven through dark berry fruit that counterbalances a somewhat structured finish laced with leather, allspice and just a touch of white pepper. This boasts impressive length, noticeably more than any earlier vintages. This excellent Saint-Émilion is just opening for business but should offer two decades of drinking pleasure. Tasted at the château.

Mint, tobacco, cherries, black raspberries, toffee, and espresso crowd onto the nose. Medium-bodied, fresh, reserved, with a core of bright, crunchy, salty fruit on the backend. Drink from 2024-2040.

A blend of 70% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2005 Beau-Sejour-Becot is another terrific 2005 that’s still young, yet offers plenty of pleasure. Crème de cassis, graphite and chocolate characteristics all emerge from this broad, fabulously pure, concentrated beauty. It’s just at the early stages of its drinking plateau and has another 2-3 decades of prime drinking ahead of it. Bravo!

Deep ruby-purple. Perfumed wild-berry bouquet, powerful and fairly profound. Compact, fine yet characterful palate, noble astringency with well-supporting tannins, blueberry-driven aromatics, promising potential. 08: Lots of cassis and elderberry, comes across as perfumed. On the palate, grainy with a certain hardness. (18/20). 14: ??? We had five bottles in circulation. Either stewed or even oxidized. Was the case improperly stored? Otherwise that would be a disaster.

Dense, sweet, velvety bouquet with mixed berries, blackberries, cherries. Fruity, concentrated, bourgeois palate with plenty of tannins, dense fruit and firm structure. Powerful finish. 18/20 2014 - 2025

Opaque color, noticeable oak, good volume with generous, indulgent fruit that is intense and fresh.

I couldn't believe it! During a lunch, this wine was served to me blind and I tasted it poorly. Worried by the result, I asked for another bottle and... it was worse! Since then, the château has confirmed the poor evolution of this vintage. This is why, from 2017 onward, Beau Séjour Bécot is changing its entire winemaking process. To resell! Oxidative nose. Palate finishing dry.

92-94 Barrel sample. Very ripe, very soft at first taste, but there's a good punch of tannins and a dense, intense palate. This has the ripeness of some New World wines.

Description

Tasting Notes and Recommendations for Château Beau-Séjour Bécot 2005

Tasting

Color

A deep garnet-red hue with orange-tinged brick highlights defines this vintage, attesting to its evolution.

Nose

The nose reveals a complex, profound bouquet combining aromas of ripe blackcurrant, redcurrant and cranberry, lifted by notes of rose petal and a distinctive minerality. With aeration, tertiary nuances of leather, tobacco, cedar, Asian spices, and subtle touches of chocolate and mocha gradually emerge.

Palate

The attack is clean and direct, gaining aromatic intensity as the tasting unfolds. The palate offers a round, fleshy texture, with concentrated flavors of ripe blackcurrant, menthol sensations and spicy notes of white pepper. The tannins, still youthful yet refined and silky, bring structure and elegance. A fresh line of acidity runs through the wine, maintaining balance and definition. The long, persistent finish lingers on notes of leather, allspice and white pepper.

Food and Wine Pairings

This wine pairs beautifully with a beef fillet served with a wild mushroom or truffle sauce. It also enhances roast duck with a porcini sauce, a leg of lamb in a parsley crust, as well as game dishes. For a regional pairing, opt for duck confit or an entrecôte à la bordelaise. Well-aged cheeses with pronounced character also make an excellent match.

Serving and Cellaring

Château Beau-Séjour Bécot 2005 is best enjoyed at a temperature between 16 and 18°C. Decanting for 2 to 3 hours is recommended to allow the wine to fully express its aromatic complexity. This wine can be cellared until at least 2035 under optimal storage conditions.

A Premier Grand Cru Classé from Saint-Émilion with Mineral Character and a Refined Structure

The Estate

Established in 1969 following its acquisition by Michel Bécot, Château Beau-Séjour Bécot is a benchmark Bordeaux estate, at the heart of Saint-Émilion’s limestone plateau. The vineyard spans around 18 hectares on clay-limestone soils with asteriated limestone, with 7 hectares of underground quarries ideal for ageing. Owned by the Bécot family, the estate has been led by Juliette Bécot since 2001, alongside Julien Barthe, Managing Director since 2014.

The Vineyard

Château Beau-Séjour Bécot 2005 comes from a vineyard located on the prestigious limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion. The clay-limestone soils with asteriated limestone impart distinctive minerality and excellent drainage, fostering the production of structured wines built for long ageing. The vines, averaging 40 years of age, are hand-harvested with rigorous grape selection. Saint-Émilion’s typical blend combines merlot as the dominant variety with cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon.

The Vintage

The 2005 vintage is among the most outstanding in Bordeaux. The year benefited from a dry climate with generous, steady sunshine from May onwards, without excessive heat. Moderate temperatures and cool nights in late August and September allowed for a gradual, balanced ripening of the grapes, encouraging the development of great aromatic complexity while preserving essential freshness. The harvest took place between 27 September and 5 October under optimal conditions, enabling grapes to be picked at perfect phenolic ripeness.

Winemaking and Ageing

Following hand-harvesting and several successive sorting passes, the grapes for Château Beau-Séjour Bécot 2005 were vinified in temperature-controlled vats. Malolactic fermentation took place in barrels. Ageing lasted sixteen months in French oak barrels, around 65% of which were new oak or one-wine barrels, with the remainder in older barrels. This proportion adds complexity and structure while preserving the expression of the terroir. Racking was carried out by gravity to respect the wine’s integrity.

Grape Varieties

Merlot, cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon.
