The elegance and complexity of a Barolo wine by Borgogno

The estate

Founded in 1761 by Bartolomeo Borgogno, the Borgogno estate is one of the oldest producers in Piedmont, Italy. Historically renowned for its wines served at diplomatic events, the estate has managed to endure through the centuries while preserving its artisanal traditions. Acquired in 2008 by the Farinetti family, it is now led by Andrea Farinetti. The estate oversees a vineyard of approximately 52 hectares, cultivated with a philosophy centred on slowness, respect for nature, and the enhancement of historic terroirs.

The vineyard

Hailing from the Annunziata cru located in the commune of La Morra, this wine is born in one of the areas renowned for producing Barolo. The vines flourish between 270 and 300 metres in altitude, benefiting from a south-southwest exposure. The terroir consists of clay-limestone soils rich in sand, a geological particularity that gives the grapes aromatic finesse and an elegant structure.

The vintage

The year 2020 began with a mild winter, followed by a gentle spring. The rains in May helped build up water reserves. The summer passed without extreme conditions, avoiding hail and storms. Finally, cool nights in September favoured a gradual ripening of the berries leading up to the harvest, carried out on 19 October, ensuring a balance between freshness and phenolic richness.

Winemaking and aging

True to traditional methods, the Barolo "Anunziata Riserva" 2020 is made through spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts for around 12 days in concrete vats. This is followed by a submerged cap maceration lasting about thirty days. The aging process continues for a minimum of 62 months, including at least 18 months in large Slavonian oak casks, allowing the structure to refine while preserving the identity of the fruit.
