Iron and sanguine aromas and flavors define this muscular red, while plum, cherry, menthol and tar notes join in on the chewy and expansive finish. Balanced on the side of the tannins for now, with fine length. Best from 2027 through 2042. 15,830 cases made, 2,500 cases imported.

Decanter

Produced since 1995, when Antinori purchased this sprawling property in Montalcino’s southwest, Pian delle Vigne expresses the balmy, Mediterranean side of Montalcino. Ebullient in its aromas of cinnamon, mint and pepper, the 2019 offers instant appeal. The palate is soft and supple in raspberry fruit with plush, velvety tannins to match. These sneak up but are ultimately kept in check. Citrussy acidity buoys, and a finale of peppermint and nutmeg enchants. While I don’t see this making old bones, it will provide plenty of pleasure over the next eight to 10 years.

The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino opens with a dark and brooding bouquet that mixes plum sauce with dark chocolate and espresso beans. This blends velvety textures with ripe red and black fruits all over a core of juicy acidity while maintaining a lifted and energetic feel. The 2019 finishes structured and long yet still relatively fresh. Orange-tinged blackberry and savory herbs linger. I am very impressed by the palate performance and tannin management of the 2019, yet I wish the winery would push for an equally fresh display on the nose. That said, fans of the Pian delle Vigne style will love the energy in this wine.

A rich ruby color, the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino is ripe and floral with aromas of sweet cherries, mocha, candied flowers, and mossy earth. Medium to full-bodied, it brings snappy fresh acidity along with ripe tannins, a clean finish, and a touch of smoky incense on the back palate. Its grip hangs on a bit, but it’s relatively approachable and will do well over the coming 10-12 years.

Antinori’s holding in Montalcino. Deep ruby with orange tinges. Rather stalky and reduced on the nose, with no obvious fruit right now. The palate is the opposite, with rich, juicy cherry fruit and an eucalyptus note from the oak, followed by rich, grainy tannins. Needs an additional year to come around and show its true colours. Description

Tasting characteristics and advice for the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino from Antinori - Pian Delle Vigne

Tasting

Color

The wine displays a ruby-red hue evolving toward garnet highlights.

Nose

The bouquet reveals remarkable aromatic complexity, opening on notes of cherries, black cherries and blood orange, complemented by nuances of violet, vanilla and subtle balsamic touches.

Palate

The attack reveals a fresh, flavorful texture, carried by silky, elegant tannins. The palate expresses ripe red and black fruit supported by a well-balanced acidity that maintains the wine’s overall vibrancy. The finish is long and persistent, lingering on aromas of citrus, delicate spices and vanilla.

Food and wine pairings

This Brunello di Montalcino pairs ideally with grilled or roasted red meats, furred and feathered game, as well as preparations featuring wild boar. It also matches perfectly with fresh pasta served with rich meat- or mushroom-based sauces, and characterful aged cheeses such as mature pecorino.

Serving and cellaring

It is recommended to serve this 2019 Brunello di Montalcino at a temperature between 16 and 18°C. Decanting for one hour before serving will allow the wine to fully express its aromatic range. This wine can be enjoyed now, but will continue to evolve favorably until around 2042.

A Brunello di Montalcino combining power and refined elegance from the Tuscan terroir

The estate

Established in 1995 by the Marchesi Antinori, Pian Delle Vigne spans 184 hectares, 83 of which are dedicated to vineyards. Now overseen by Albiera Antinori and Alessia Antinori in charge of winemaking, this family estate stands out for its aging philosophy in large casks ranging from 30 to 80 hectoliters, preserving the exceptional integrity of Sangiovese. The vineyards, planted on clay-limestone soils at 130 meters altitude with a southwest exposure, produce Brunello di Montalcino DOCG wines that combine structural power and refined elegance—an authentic expression of the Tuscan terroir.

The vineyard

The Pian Delle Vigne vineyard from which this Brunello di Montalcino is produced covers 83 hectares located about six kilometers southwest of the town of Montalcino. The parcels benefit from a southwest exposure at an altitude of around 130 meters, promoting optimal grape ripening. The soils, made up of clay with a significant presence of limestone and fine gravel, give the wine its distinctive structure while allowing the natural aromatic complexity of Sangiovese to express itself.

The vintage

The 2019 vintage in Tuscany proved exceptional thanks to particularly favorable weather conditions. Spring began with above-average temperatures during the first half, followed by cool, dry weather that benefited vegetative growth. May brought repeated rainfall, ensuring excellent water reserves. Summer was marked by steady warmth without extreme heatwaves, with timely precipitation in mid-July and August that revitalized the vines. September delivered warm temperatures and dry conditions, enabling optimal ripening. Harvest began on September 20 and finished in early October—an ideal period for producing balanced, age-worthy wines.

Vinification and aging

After harvesting, the grapes for this 2019 Brunello di Montalcino are destemmed and gently crushed before being transferred to stainless-steel vats. Alcoholic fermentation takes place under temperature control maintained at 28°C. Skin maceration continues for around twelve days to extract color and refined tannins while preserving the fruit’s aromatic character. After completion of malolactic fermentation, the wine is transferred to large-capacity oak casks ranging from 30 to 80 hectoliters, where it ages for two full years. This large-cask aging method favors fruit integrity and the expression of terroir. The wine then continues to refine in bottle before release.

Grape variety

100% Sangiovese.
